Basically, the coral formed along I-75 from Valdosta GA to Tampa FL. A high ridge that was shallow water during a warm age. Fanning Springs is to the west but centrally located to coral range. It can be found in the Santa Fe and Suwannee Rivers cross under I-75 basically. Ocinifina (spelling ?) and Withlacoochee River starting near Valdosta and till it flows into the Suwannee. All over Pasco and Hillsborough county at construction digs. You will be close to a lot of coral. Keep in mind, it is about all under 20 feet of sand. So rivers or construction digging is needed to expose it. Okay am I looking for particular colors on the crust of the coral or weight alone to tell me if it's agatized ? Sorry for all the questions but I'm only a week away from leaving and I'm dancing around like a school girl with a new princess dress lol

Not so fast.
You need low river levels.(nonexistent at this time) You need a boat or a kayak to access coral at low river levels.
Chances of coral being found on the surface are slim to none.
And a hammer to break the white/off-white limestone coating off to see innards.

I will be heading to fanning springs Florida in a couple weeks has anyone had success finding agatized coral on the beaches around the mouth of the swaunee river or anywhere in that area ? Would like to find a couple pieces for cabbing. Hey cowboy, there is agatized coral pretty much everywhere in Florida. On your way to Fanning stop off first at White Springs and park at the springhouse next to city hall. Walk around the springhouse and if the water is low grab all of the coral that you want. I do. Often. Larger coral heads can weigh a great deal so let them dry in the sun a bit before carrying them up the steps to the parking lot. But watch out for mastodon fossils, shell fossils, and arrow heads. Ya can't pick up the indian artifacts, that is illegal.
Remember that the Withlacoochee river flows into the Suwannee about twenty-five miles later. Check out the 'Cooch coral on eBay along with Tampa Bay coral. It's all that.
The river at Fanning is so full of fossils that you will forget all about the corals; but they can be found there as well. Don't even get me started on Holiday Beach.
Best of luck.
