Good evening folks. Thought I would drop in, say hello, and introduce myself.
My name is Dave, and I live in California - specifically Ventura County. My first exposure to the hobby was over 15 years ago, as I started tumbling rocks with my son. However, that abruptly came to a stop when he started playing baseball since everything seemed to revolve around the sport. As such, the tumbling equipment was put away until one week ago.
I've always had a latent interest in rocks and such, but I never really found time to dive back into the hobby. Retirement one year ago, after 34 years in the Fire Department, has allowed me to explore different interests, and I've found myself coming full circle back to rocks. Tumbling will probably be at the forefront of what I do in this area. I just received a second Lortone 45C (and an additional barrel) just to help speed up the process a bit. As I move further along in the hobby, perhaps a vibe tumbler will be on the list to make things go even a bit quicker.
In addition to tumbling, I occasionally go fossil hunting where I live (surface picking only) and have had some success. Shells are pretty common here, but I came away with a shark's tooth on my first time out. I'd also like to get into wire wrapping just to do something a bit different. Right now, I'm exploring joining a local rock club, as I'd like to get out in the field more to do some hounding and learn more about rocks in general. The club apparently has a shop, and I'd like to do some work with cabochons.
I've spent alot of time here reading lately, and I'm glad I found the site. There's clearly a wealth of knowledge here in multiple areas, and I'm looking forward to learning more. Being a total rock newbie, and knowing pretty much nothing, I'll probably be asking more than contributing. But, I look forward to being around and jumping in when I can. Thanks for putting up with a long intro. Best regards.
