Here a lot of the thrift shops are run by charities and sometimes the staff are volunteers. Some are big and somewhat junky and others are small and/or try to be more selective about the merchandise. The local hospice and the American Cancer Society carry more than clothes and try to keep the stores tidy. I bet both would refuse firearms though.

I used to love going to local thrift stores to "pop some tags". Recently, the prices on stuff have gotten high, whereby some items could be procured new for about the same as they are asking. Even so, if you poke around enough, there is always a bargain to be had on unusual items (that nobody else knows what it is) or if you really know your products/pricing. I really like the volunteer hospital stores for old books. The best story is from my brother who wore a Value Village sports jacket to a boring party and stood off in the corner eating mints from his pocket, until he realized he was probably "eating dead guy's candy". They way he tells the story is hilarious.

A long time ago when the West was young and these story's were new, I attended a Fish & Game Auction and noticed a .22 rifle that sold new at around $60. 00. Thinking I could pick it up for around $35-50, I hung around until the bid reached $150. People go crazy at auctions and refuse to lose.

accidentalrockhound lit a fire under my butt to go check the local thrift store again.
Picked this coral chunk up a few months ago: Front
Back
No idea how old, where it cam from, or what type it is. jamesp put the coral bug in me, I will pick up whatever I see. (If it is cheap enough, lol. You know me!). I think we may have paid $5 or $6 for this then, they still have his brother for the hefty sum of $3.
These almost broke the bank @ $1 each. The thrift store did not represent them as such (they did not represent them as anything!), but I believe they are coprolites. Picked one up in the past, either at Q, or at a rock show. Sold to us as a turtle doodie! I was going to take of photo of that first one, but will have to "turn the pile over" to find it. Older stones/fossils artifacts in the wall unit have a way of becoming buried by newer things.
This is ? something crystally, fibrousy, cost a buck. Some kind of mineral. Pinkish/purple on back.
Lumpy, bumpy, soft
Wet
Edge
Lastly, don't know what it is. A little heavy, but not so much.
Paid 1/10th of that, $3. (See, I can do math, lol.) Must ha=ve bee worth something to somebody.
Freshly broken edge.
Okay, okay, I know the drill. Will do some testing when I get a minute. And take some better pics. Just got home, and got other stuff to do, gee whiz.

Thank you, jamesp , that really narrows it down. Of course it is ocean coral. Maybe I should have mentioned that it is fossilized. That makes it old, too.

I LOOOVE MY THRIFT STORES!! I also sew an embroider so instead of buying new I refashion! Not many people here in Mississippi care about rocks so nothing on that but that just means there is more for me to find!!! Take a trip to Flora, Miss where the petrified forest is and you will see logs and chunks of pet wood in most people's front yards!

Hounding other peoples yards w/o permission is a buckshot of an idea. I seldom dare road island hounding - but some are irresistible.

This has turn into thrift store Levi pants. Yes I love them too. Brought3 pairs of Levi's there for 12 bucks. Good pants to play rocks in because you don't care what happens to them. Money well spent...leaves more money for buying rocks. HA

a cool book end went into my local haunt and low and behold a set of book ends for 6.99$ .i did not buy them went in a few days later and their was only one book end. no price tag ? looked around for the other one and no luck. so i brought this one book end to the cashier and asked if i can buy this? in turn they sold it to me for a dollar because they had no idea what it was . i dont know im no expert but i imagine this was made some time in the 70's judging by the patina and material. so not bad for a 1$ i wanted to free the slablets but i think i will leave it as is.what do you think?

So those Chinese statues are amazing. And priceless. Literally. Like it's probably illegal to sell them or even drive them over a state line! Elephant ivory is heavily protected with harsh penalties.
You have zero provenance. I'd look into donations to avoid possible legal issues down the road.

I asked a Chinese co worker and he said it translates to "Qianlong Emperor". The inscription can be interpreted a few ways, one would mean property of the king, if this is real it would be in a museum or it was smuggled out. The other is just the name of the king. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qianlong_EmperorGood starting point. Cool score. Tim Wow.thanks for the leed, i looked at the link and thought wow cause my friend told me the scripture was old. When i asked him how old he thought 300 years or more from his basic knowlage? And the amout of detail in them is amazing,

You have zero provenance. I'd look into donations to avoid possible legal issues down the road. Found this. It's the current rules from Fish and Wildlife, who manage the US regulations on ivory. On July 6, 2016, a near-total ban on commercial trade in African elephant ivory went into effect in the United States. The information on this webpage is intended to provide guidance for those who wish to buy, sell, or otherwise trade in elephant ivory. It’s important to note that the new regulations do not restrict personal possession of ivory. If you already own ivory – an heirloom carving that’s been passed down in your family, or a vintage musical instrument with ivory components, those pieces are yours. We know those items created long ago aren’t threatening today’s wild elephants.FWS Ivory Info
