Tims Thanks for the report. just what I expected. It would be a bear to get stuck at the bottom of that big hill. I have hunted that area two times. I have thought that it might be productive to work along the rim for newly exposed rock. The creek bottom is full of calcedony but it is thin and I don't know how you would use it. I found the thicker pieces of calcedony up on the hill side. The thicker pieces showed some nice banding that I used to cut cabs.

I'd suspect that the infinity sign is just on the surface. It looks like that may be the place where another nodule broke away from the piece you found. If you're very careful, you might be able to put a shine on it. Mike / Fossilman could better tell you if you have baculite in matrix. I have a piece of that black matrix sitting here on my desk that's loaded with small clam shells. It also came from Indian Creek. After another look it doesn't look like baculite; it's curved and there seems to be some nacre outside of the tubular area I thought was baculite:
Too chilly for work so took some pics of other stuff from the trip:
Banded stuff:
Lacy stuff and a clear / white nodule with strange coral-ish exterior:
Thought this was wood, but clean i'm not sure:
Misc. stuff
No,its not Baculite.......

Hey Tims, where are you located at ? You must be near to be hunting Indian Creek. I'm in Newcastle WY, 125 miles from the Indian Creek area in Buffalo Gap, just west of Scenic SD. Are you in the Rapid City area? Two of my brothers lived there for a few years, roughnecking on the drilling rigs,in that area......

Fossilman any clue what that fossil is? The nacre on what i thought was the matrix is confusing. I don't envy your brothers, you couldn't pay me enough to Rig Pig at least in the winter here. The downtime in nice weather would allow for some paid rock kicking but the rest can be hard, dangerous work. I ground down a spot on the back of that infinity rock a little, maybe 1/16" and it goes to a thin layer of red / orange then to pearly chalcedony beyond that. The features of the eye and surrounding band seem to continue but are less distinct. Will probably have to split it open for a look and try to miss the eyes and infinity in case they turn into faces.

Nope. I'm way up in the NE corner of SD. Aberdeen. Got a couple rockhound friends in Rapid City though, and another in Pierre who goes out to Indian Creek often. Busy in November?? My and my Labs would love to pay you a visit. LOL

Nacre? Google that word. Why? I know what nacre is. If you're confused by the association of the word with that photo, you misread the post. The nacre is on the fossil piece not that jasp-agate whatever it is (still haven't cut it). This is the one with confusing nacre:
