I was just doing some homework, and I read a thread that shared: If you just have one rock, you could mail it to most anyone on the thread and they would be happy to polish it for you.
Well, I have just one small river rock from the Smokey Mountain National Park that I would like to be polished up to make into a necklace for the wife. I thought about the rock tumbler, which I find to be interesting, but quickly realized that I was in over my head. And just for one small, flat stone the cost of equipment and supplies seemed to be high. That being said, if it is cheaper to buy the stuff and make the effort, that sounds pretty good too!
The rock seems to pass the "hardness scratch" test I have read about on your board. It is a brown rock with lighter brown, almost cream colored bands through it.
I have placed an ad on my local Craigslist for this service with no response. I would be happy to include a fee for the polishing service, pay for supplies, or send some salt water taffy from Florida if anyone is interested in helping this guy out!
Thanks for any replies my rockhound friends!

Hi James welcome. Two things - you're posting as an unregistered guest - if you would take a few minutes to sign up and post as a member it's free and it will gain you a much higher level of respect and admiration Secondly - it's not wise to post your email address in public on a forum like this. Forums are scraped by spam-robots every day searching for email addresses to add to lists they sell. Again welcome, I'm betting you'll get some help here - our members seem to like polishing rocks for no real reason

What Tommy said. Can a "guest" edit a post"? Remove that email address if you can.
And, register as a member so people can send you a message. May be that your rock is more suited to being made into a cab (best for a necklace) than for tumbling. Hard to say without seeing it. Sign up here so someone can get a picture of the rock via email and post it here to see what the folks here have to recommend.
Welcome to the forum.
