Nice!

Nice find. From what I have heard it is getting harder to find and more expensive.

If it were mine I would keep it as is. It's a very nice specimen.

100% leave it whole. Whether you keep it or not, worth more whole. Should you want to sell or trade it, please keep me in mind. I would tumble it whole, probably starting at 320 or 500 grit to retain the present shape but shine it up. Tiger iron is hematite, (red) jasper and tiger eye. Don't know if it is getting harder to find, but it has always been more expensive than tiger eye. Always been a favorite of mine, probably have around 300 lbs and still buy it when I run across a nice piece. This is a 78+ lb chunk Really like the chunk as is whole, but keep thinking about facing it to polish that side forward in the picture. It's impressive now, but face polished would be a jaw dropper.

Henry, I would recommend hiring one of those 3 Guys & a Truck companies. Make sure they have a really really big truck!

Nice tiger iron. I have noticed that it is getting harder to get the good stuff, too.
Keep it whole.

Please split the hair between Banded Iron formation and Tiger Iron for me. Not being a dick. I promise. I'm ignorant and I don't like that!

Banded iron has jasper, may be red or gold or yellow, with the hematite - or possibly magnitite instead of hematite, but usually hematite. (2 "ingredients")
Tiger iron is hematite, jasper AND tiger eye. (3 "ingredients")
So they are close yet different.
Never heard of tiger iron being found in the northern hemisphere. Usually from Aussie or S. Africa.

Yes sir. Glad to help. Here is a 20 lb chunk of banded iron that I got off eBay last month. You will notice it has both the yellow & red jasper between the layers of hematite. (gonna make fantastic tumbles) you may also notice it was a 1 second snipe (as usual due to the rapscallion in me) www.ebay.com/itm/Crazy-Banded-Layered-Magnetite-Jasper-Michigan-Jaspilite-Lapidary-Hematite-20-lb-/142237598971?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=CnIg%252F5r3RIa2%252FjbfBERNSpg0wD8%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=ncThis is some tiger iron I got years ago - with the hematite, red jasper and tiger eye These rocks tumble the same. But there is nothing as pretty as perfectly tumbled tiger iron. (IMO) But... with red jasper with bands of hematite, the hematite undercut bigly. Probably my fault for not keeping a closer eye on it. Never bothered to polish this garbage once I saw what I had done to it. Badly fractured anyway. Guy mined it with a backhoe and fractured the heck out of it. Early tumbling lesson - learned. Jasper Mohs 6 ½ - 7 Hematite Mohs 5½ - 6½ Probably would have been okay to tumble if I had been paying attention. Too much time allowed the hematite to undercut. But never would have been all that anyway with the excessive fractures.
