I agree, let the stone define the shape and you'll end up with a winner. The polish is evident in the pix too. Nicely done!

Gorgeous, all of them! That Amethyst is one of the prettiest I've seen, so hard to find a nice piece to cab. And I love the pink and yellow together in the Rhodonite - didn't know Italy had Rhodonite! So there's Australian, Californian, and Italian, at least. Thanks for sharing! Oh, love the shape on the Grossular Garnet with Vesuvianite. Isn't Vesuvianite what they call Happy Camp Jade? (yet another not-jade rock with "Jade" in the name).

Oh, love the shape on the Grossular Garnet with Vesuvianite. Isn't Vesuvianite what they call Happy Camp Jade? (yet another not-jade rock with "Jade" in the name). Thanks for your comments. The amethyst cab was actually cut from a tumbled stone -- one of the few sources of "rough" I can find these days. The rhodonite was a one-off gift from an Italian friend. Wish I could get more. Schumann's "Gems of the World" says rhodonite deposits are found in Finland, Japan, Canada, Madagascar, Mexico, Russia, Sweden, South Africa and Tanzania in addition to Italy and the sources you mention. Both Happy Camp Jade and Pulga Jade are misnomers for this material because neither are jade. The mixture of grossular and vesuvianite (aka idocrase) is extremely variable, from semi-translucent pieces like the one I posted to highly translucent -- almost transparent -- material. Some is even suitable for faceting. The yellowish-green content is vesuvianite while the whitish portion is the garnet. Because of that variability John Sinknankas suggested the name "Californite," coined by George F. Kunz of Tiffany fame, would probably be the most accurate. As Sinkankas goes, so do I in this case.

Oh interesting. The idocrase piece I had was more of a solid color - I like yours with the flecks floating in clear.

Beautiful work with some beautiful material! Not sure which I like the most.... azurite, feather ridge, charoite, MT aggie..... too many favs The rhodonite is unusual. Once upon a time, I had a BIG cab of some beautiful rhodonite with lots of very nice yellow. Is that unique to the Italian stuff? Looking forward to seeing more.

Looking forward to seeing more. @tela, rhodonite often has small inclusions of yellowish spessartine. I've seen some nice ones from Australia and I'm sure the two minerals are found in association elsewhere. I thought this one was unusual because it has so much of the garnet and the typical black manganese inclusions are absent.
