I'm presently running a tumble cycle inspired by this method. Couple differences; I'm using AO 320 instead of AO 500 (just what I had on hand). I also hope to cut that stage from 5 days to 3 days and assess the results. At that point, i may switch to AO 14k, but hopefully I won't need to. Overall goal is to keep Lot-O stages to 5 days or less.

Well you certainly can't argue with the results.

Drummond Island Rocks, I think you hit the biggest issue with rock tumbling as a hobby. The really nice rocks take a LONG time in the rough stage and most of these rocks aren't the "found in my backyard" type of material. Factor in a instruction sheets saying 1 week per grit, weird mixes of soft/hard rocks and small tumblers with a questionable "grit pack" and people are bound to fail. Plus this message board can be very overwhelming with everyone having a different way of getting to the finish line and a new/improved experiment being started every other week. I eventually just sent a message to a couple of users I most wanted to "be like" and adopted their way of tumbling. I think this is advice worth repeating to newbies. The influx of opinions from multiple sources is confusing. I did the same as you, picked an unknowing mentor or two and looked for their techniques in old posts. Chuck was one of those mentors.
