This lone piece was among an old stash I bought a while back. Didn't look like much on the outside, but when I cut it, my jaw dropped! I have not seen any quite like this, so have no idea of mine or age of material. I just know I would like to have a lot more of it! The stone was so pretty I chose to set it very simply

It looks like very high quality black spiderweb turquoise from Number Eight mine, now discontinued, so can only be sourced from old stock. I suggest you research this for confidence and price accordingly.

Thanks all. This was from a pretty old stash, so I doubt anything from the 80's or newer made it into the batch. I'm reasonably competent on ID'ing Turquoise, but have not seen this before and the material it was mixed in with was old stock Kingman which this definitely is not.
It is a darker Blue than it shows up in the pic and the matrix is jet black and quite hard. I have seen a lot of #8, but none with matrix this dark. It comes pretty close to the old original Lander Blue, but I surely couldn't be that lucky :-) I tell customers what my experience leads me to believe, but I never claim any mine without provenance which this does not have

That is a really beautiful stone. Good for you for knowing it needed to go simple. It's just right. Wish I could help with ID. How about it comes from the land of awesome?

This resembles the real Lander Blue turquoise. Most of what is sold as Lander Blue on the market today is not. Very little of it was ever mined and without a solid provenance it would be tough to ever validate. But your stone very much resembles the few pieces of true Lander Blue from reputable sources that I have seen. Beautiful stone though regardless of where it is from!

Thanks all. I'm on a few bookface turquoise groups and we have had some good discussions about possible locations, but none can be applied to the stone without provenance. My gut tells me Lander Blue, but common sense tells me Cloud Mountain from China just because it is a bit more common. That one just might wind up on my finger!

IMO it resembles Lander Blue more so than Cloud Mountain. I know so many people have tried to pass off turquoise from other sources as being Lander Blue that it makes an honest person as yourself gun-shy about attributing an unprovenanced piece as being Lander Blue. Plus has made others in the market skeptical. And it is true that there have been a few other small "hat mine" deposits of similar looking material that never produced enough material to be commonly known. But I do not recall seeing Chinese Cloud Mountain rough here in the U.S. until the 1990s. So if this was from an old collection from the 1980's or earlier I believe the likelihood that it is U.S. material would be more likely than it being Chinese material. But regardless it's a beautiful piece that should be worn proudly!
