Not my thread, Jean. Rant away. Always good to hear real world experiences. Naprosyn twice a day gave me heart palpitations. Yup. A known side effect. Thanks! Take meds for that now, too. I really hope your man finds an end to all of this!
Oops, my bad. Sorry Rick gemfeller . I got cornfused. Hope you didn't mind too much
Seems you are a gout sufferer yourself. Beware the indomethacin!
The cabs are ALL great, I like the Rio and seam agate the best!

Yep allopurinol and no spinach.. Beer drives it crazy. Cant find my indomethacin right now and walk a lot at the nursery so get cramps from favoring the gout part. Dang hate this getting old thing and all its fun pains. The only crystals we don't like.. thanks for the kind words. Can you say "purines" Cliff? Gotta watch what you eat for sure. Mrrockpicker has gout. It was plenty painful for me whenever he had a gout attack, although he hasn't had one in a while, knock on wood. Years ago, when first diagnosed, his doctor put him on allopurinol and indomethacin. His father had also suffered from gout, was on the same meds. FIL told Bob the indomethacin will give you an ulcer, it did to him. So when his doctor prescribed them, Bob asked about the ulcer connection. Doc says, "Oh, yeah, they'll give you an ulcer. But then we'll treat you for that." How's that for honesty? lol.
So probably a safe bet that his recent medical episodes (losing blood in digestive tract and becoming anemic) are related to using indomethacin. Or, could have been a host of other NSAIDs he was taking for pain. No more Alleve for him, no baby aspirin before taking Slo-Niacin (reduces flushing), so he no longer takes that, either. As a consequence, his cholesterol level has gone way up.
Cholesterol level, however takes a backseat to unexplained blood loss. Has had an upper endoscopy, found esophageal ulcers, severe gastritis, and a hiatal hernia. Oh, joy. He has had to stop taking some drugs, and is taking others. Next up, colonoscopy. Nothing out of the ordinary found there. Last event, capsule endoscopy, for the reaches of the intestine that were not covered by the first two procedures. Again, nothing found to explain it. What the gastroenterologist hopes is that by taking the new meds, everything will heal up, he will quit losing blood and being anemic. Labs at the end of this month, we'll see how his iron level is doing, and go from there.
Long story short, watch out for NSAIDs, they can do you in!
Oh geez, did I type all that? Sorry for the major thread derail, Tela. (Cliff started it!) Will remove it all if you wish, just say the word.
Wow Good thing I read fast.. grin. Kind words sis. Yeah this older thing bites. Still strong as a bull and almost as smart but little things nibble at you at time. Thanks for the headsup on the indomethacin, Don't take much of it but need it at time. Businesses used to give me an ulcer but you coul set me on fire at this point of life and I wouldn't get too excited.. Love colonoscopies. I demand to stay awake and watch the camera. Like all sciences stuff. Cant say that purines word. When I try to say anything at all, all that comes out is .....'rock... me want" Am sure the hubby likes us all talking about his butt and that it will be floating in hyperspace for eons. poor man.. I didn't start it,, Sticking my tongue out at Jean..

My Naprosyn sits in a bottle untouched and is dying a virgin. Thanks for the info. Tela.

Those are all outstanding cabs. I'd have to say the white orby one is very cool and wish you had more too. The Brenda cab is very well done, you captured the pattern in a cool shape. I'm also partial to the garnet because it is a great color. Ah heck, all of them are beautiful. Glad you at least got some cabbing done. Jean rockpickerforever sorry to hear about mr rockpicker's health issues. Hope they figure it out for him.

Thanks, Diane drocknut. He is better now than he was several months ago. He is soldiering on. Despite his bad back, and this latest saga, he still manages to want to go prospecting as much as possible!!

zekesman , Yes, Nature has a way of taking care of all things at the End. But gout isn't necessarily an old age ailment. I've had it since my early 30s. It's caused by an inability to metabolize purines (uric acid) which then crystallizes in the joints, usually starting in the big toe joint, causing agonizing pain. Nasty malady. The old-time cure was poison (colchicine) taken in measured doses. I once took too much and found the treatment was even worse than the disease. Re: Hydrogrossular. As the movie title says, it's complicated. Basically it's a massive form of grossular garnet containing water but often it forms a solid solution with other minerals, usually vesuvianite (aka idocrase). One of the types from South Africa is inaccurately sold as "Transvaal Jade," while the grossular/vesuvianite mix from the U.S. (mainly CA but also OR and WA and??) is called Californite/Happy Camp Jade/Pulga Jade. There are some lovely green to pink translucent "watermelon" colors, mainly from S.A. I like some of the colors in U.S. material as well. I've been studying the stuff for 20 years and have yet to come up with a neat one-size-fits-all description for what I see on the market. The cab shown was cut from rough that was tested by the GIA as hydrogrossular. There are other types, including an opaque mottled black/green material. The black is probably chromite or magnetite while the green part seems to be grossular/vesuvianite. Hope this doesn't cause more confusion than clarity.

DH and his brother get gout, too. DH has it in one of his toes right now. His brother, though, gets it extremely bad. He has tried meds that he says are just as bad as the gout. They both now use a short run of prednisone. Prednisone always resolves it, but not without risk. It's good if you only occasionally get it.
