Texas does have some nice materials to work with. Those are really nice, love the shapes and the shine is fabulous. I want to get out that way some day to collect.

Great cabs. You really shined them up well and the photography is great too. From this batch I actually think I like the two moss examples better than the plume....Mel

Superb cabs! Is this material far from Woodward ranch? Some of the cabs resemble with the ones from there.

Superb cabs! Is this material far from Woodward ranch? Some of the cabs resemble with the ones from there. Adrian Hi Adrian The Walker Ranch is directly south of the Woodward Ranch. Brian, the owner of the the Walker Ranch, was telling us that much of the old material that you see from the Woodward came from the Walker...they used to have an open gate between the ranches and there was a lot of crossover. Both ranches include sections of the Bird Hills, which seems to be the source of the red and black plume material, plus others. Of course, the Woodward has been sold and closed to collecting, and the Walker is now closed, we hope temporarily. Thanks all, for your comments. Craig

From this batch I actually think I like the two moss examples better than the plume....Mel Hi Mel Those two moss cabs are really big, especially the oval. They were thin nodules that only yielded one slabbette each and I could not bring myself to cut them up, so I just made large cabs. I was the same situation with the first plume one, but its a little smaller. I was kind of disappointed in the the last one that the plume didn't show until I backlit it. BTW..I don't really have enough Rios to make up a group, but here is a cab I cut from a nodule I got in a box from you...

These ranches are in the Big Bend of Texas. Walker is south of Alpine about 20 miles or so. Singleton is south of Marfa about 30 miles. Been cutting more of the rock I collected there in March. It is really nice material. A bit tough to cut as most of the biscuits are on the smaller, flat side. I have been gluing to wood and it's working well.

Hi all Over the last two years, I have gone to Texas to hunt the Walker, Singleton and South Larremore Ranches with Teri Smith. Here are some cabs from the agates I collected. I will post them by ranch in a couple of threads so that the pictures are no t all in one. Hope that helps with downloads. Let's start with the Walker Ranch: Note: I replaced most of the photos here with better versions. I managed to get the colors closer to the look of the cab in the hand. And I added one...Backlit Thanks for looking!!! Craig

Want to collect there too. Love the plumes. Are these ranches in the hill country? Look online for Teri Smith Rockhunts or Rockhunting in the Big Bend of Texas and you should find her. She runs numerous trips to the ranches in the Alpine/Marfa area every year during the cooler months. I should be there in October. I'm hoping to stretch the trip out and go on south to Laredo and Zapata/Falcon Lake areas if I can work out the time frame.
