That fourth piece looks a lot like the rhyolite I pick up in the U.P. I love that stuff. IS it a hard rhyolite? Will it take a polish? Another lucky guy living in the land of the lakers. There are some soft spots, but most of it polishes up nicely. There's a piece in the first picture of this post.

Here's another picture. I've found other pieces on the same beach that look more like Wigglin's rock. I know where the rock is at home, but I'm not home for a few days.

I usually have pretty good luck with these if I can get past those little quartz pockets that seem to open about the time I think it is time to move them to the next stage .

Those are some sweet rocks. Makes me wish I didn't live in NY. seems like most of the rocks here are boring and un-tumble-able.

Bold splashes in this one while Hickoryite is more orderly lined with slow swirls. Have some on down the schedule to tumble so you can see. Saw some of Dale's flint ridge that you rolled . Waiting for some to come in now. Was yours natural or had the knappers Heat treated it? Thank you for showing this uniquely Upper Peninsula rhyolite to us , Cliff

Cool picks. Fun place to vist I bet the gravel place. Do you know the people? How did you get permission? I just ask because they just passed a geavel operation here where I live. East of me would be nice to hound after they begin digging.by the way copper is cool but for some reason I'm like that banded iron. I do know the owners of most of the pits around here . Not hard getting permission once they know what you're up to , when you say you're looking for rocks to polish you don't get quite as many funny looks or comments . The pits are mostly private owned so I can butter up the owners with some polished rock things as a thank you . Works every time . Feel quite fortunate because some areas require MSHA certification just to enter the property . Not hard to understand the regulations , too many stupid people doing stupid things ruin it for everyone . Yep, We have too many regulations and laws that make no sense and serve no purpose. Live across a small Colorado river from a gravel pit but not the jasper, agate, pet wood materials. Granites, sandstones, some plain quartz. Same senseless laws though.

You've come up with a load of nice finds lately. They go red, red, red, red, red, green. Nice get on that copper piece! Love the banded iron also.

It is a lot easier to get a variety of color during the rain or as soon as its over . But even when it is dry , the reds show up good . Lot more of the oolitic , or whatever its called , variety of jaspers than the solid red or banded . That stuff is nice also , red dots and hematite dots . This kind of dotted stuff , ADMIN EDIT - repaired broken images

I'm not sure if it was heat treated or not.

I'm not sure if it was heat treated or not. Adave also got some from our friend Dale and he thinks that there wasnt enough bright colors to have been heated. A friend today told me a bout a flint deposit a few miles from my house. Off white though. Nothing pretty. Will roll by and check it out when I get time. Thanks, Cliff

Nice. Reminds me of my college days when I lived near an old gravel pit that had not been actively used in years. Lots of agates and the banded iron with white quartz there. Wish I could find an inactive gravel pit around here.

Wish I could find an inactive gravel pit around here. I don't remember the name , but there used to be a gravel outfit around Amherst . Maybe you could check with them for info . They might give you a list of pit to prowl around in during non-business hours .
