It used to be one of the sites the Quartzsite Gem and Mineral Club went to annually but not sure they still go there. I don't have exact coordinates and have never been to the site but it is indeed near Quartzsite, AZ

The place was under claim to the Quartzsite club. I hope they let it go and kept the mushroom ryolite. They were spending too much on claims and had to let some go. I been there to hound the site . Unsuccessfully I might add. It's just west of Quartzsite in sight of Rt. 10 Nobody found any and it's hard digging. You find a white seem and just start digging it up and following it across the hillside hoping once you get someone else's spoils out of the way you will hit a vein of red and white. It's very soft and needs careful cabbing. It's like green andvwhite striped Quinn Pass ryolite. Hard to tell if what you found will cab or not. None of either one tumbles very well. You can tumble the ryolite but it has to be run over the high wheels and zam polished. The Alunite needs very slow work done best with a flat lap I am told.

I have heard the same as Bill said. I havent been there but I did go look at an estate in Portland once that had approx 5 tons of it. Sadly we never could make a deal.

Yep Tony it's been dug with heavy equipment on the bottom of the claim and supposedly high up on the hill you can find small veins. I am huge on my statements about no place is totally picked ove. I always say go and see you will probably find plenty. Maybe the rock club trip with 30 or so people had a bad day and didn't look hard enough .... duh....LOL

Yes that's the claim. Those b claim jumpers! I saw nothing there that is gem quality red and white alunite. Those stained rocks they showed are all over and are what people cobbled off looking for the good stuff. Look closely and you will see a couple of holes folks have dug. They dug it with commercial equipment to crush for the elements. A lut of places are like that. The dumorterite claim is the same. Problem being 500000 people boondock around Quartzsite every year!!!

I love alunite and that's a great cab! I have been told that the good stuff comes from near quartzite and that there is another site that is not so good. I had some and it was very soft and crumbly. I never did get a cab done of it. I have bought some cabs, though. Makes me wonder if it needs to be stabilized.

Stuff getting hard to get? I bought cabs for abt 15 years before I started cabbing. I had some good sources. 2 of those sources independently told me that the good alunite is getting rare. I don't know how true that is, but they had given me lots of good info before. It is true that you don't see it much anymore. I did buy a small chunk when I first started cabbing. None of it was actually cabbable. I guess I could have stabilized it though. That's a nice slab to keep an eye on.
