Melissa, you are much more of the social butterfly than I am. Meeting some folks from here would be icing on the cake, but I would go for the cake rocks.
Billy, I have no set plans. Mother in Law is coming down to Florida for January & February. She will be spending some time elsewhere, but quite a bit here as well. Having her here allows me to take off as she can take care of the critters. When she figures out a schedule I will know more about when I want to get outta Dodge. Figure if I can get out that way I may bounce around from place to place. It was in the 80s there last January, no tellin' if Mother Nature will be so kind this year. If I go, I doubt it would be before deer hunting season ends on the 24th of January. Would want to hit some new areas as the places I covered last year are now rather lacking in rocks, and a lot of that land is private property which we were allowed to access because Jim had made friends and arrangements with the land owners.

There is tent camping at the RV park connected to Desert Gardens. It's run by the people who rent space to vendors at DG. I've camped there about 4 different years. Tent camping used to be at the southern edge of their property, but they moved it to the west side of their property, fairly close to Love's gas station. It's $10 per tent. They have $.50 showers (2 in the men's bathroom, not sure about women's). There can be quite a wait for the shower. They also have a swap-a-book library with a couple of couches and a table. There's a stove, sink & microwave, which we have put to good use. Laundry too. Lynn Are you going this year Lynn? Haven't decided yet. I told my wife I'd just buy more rock, and I've already got 17 lifetimes worth. She said she just wants to be able to wear a T-shirt & sandals in January. If we do come, it'll be during the Pow Wow & Tony's BBQ. Lynn

I updated the map with a couple more possibly worthwhile stops. Was at Q from 12/30-1/1 - it was great! Super fun meeting Scott and Jeannie.

What a great resource and info Bluesky! It's on my bucket list for sure, but right now I'm not supposed to add to my rock collection until after we move to Tucson in 18 months, sigh. After that, I'll see if I can get my BH to hook up the RV and make it to Tony's BBQ and buy some pretty rock!!

Hi all Well, we took our day trip on the 2nd and had so much fun, we're going back on the 17th for the Pow Wow. Took some schedule arranging but worth it. I didn't even get all the vendors at DG scoped out. Almost everybody was open and some of my favorites had some killer stuff. I'll try to get pics of my finds posted tomorrow. Unfortunately, going over on the 17th, we won't make the BBQ unless we drive back to Q. I have a high school soccer game to coach in San Diego on the 18th. Craig

Cool socalagatehound, just missed you then. There was definitely some sweeeeet material there. What'd you get? My special finds were a small bucket of Swazi Agate and a piece of chatoyant dino bone. Oh and a bunch of little pieces of nice OJ.

New New Years Resolution - Buy out the Aussies - In another lifetime. The entire attendance of the show won't end up buying all he has. He stores half or more for next year. The second year, really good stuff gets sold out after word got our the first year. Thanks to Bluesky78987 for taking those pics. I never think to do such.

Oh and a bunch of little pieces of nice OJ. I'll bet that Bone is cool! Didn't see that. I got some OJ but someone got all the best small pieces Some pice: Usually it's difficult to find small pattern Willow Creek for cabs. Larry had a banner year with small pattern from a new part of the claim, so I had to get it while I could. Purple Passion from Parcelas, Mexico (Silverhill) backlit Royal Black Agate from Mexico (Zippys) Ocean Jasper... The best slabs were in the hundreds of dollars. I couldn't go there, but these are interesting for cabs (SilverHill) Caddis Fly Larvae Agate from Sumatra (Zippys). There were some large slabs with bright red, but upon drying them, they had lots of spidery micro-fractures, so I didn't take them. Someone comfortable using one of the fracture healing compounds could make some killer cabs with them. Zippy said there's a lot of waste rock with it, so we may not see dealers with it very often. Aussie Brecciated Pink Opal from Glenn ... had to dig deep in the barrel to find good brec All for now. Thanks for looking Craig

Very cool Craig socalagatehound! I didn't see that agate at Zippy's booth. Will ask him about those during Pow Wow - they'll probably be all sold! Was looking for brecciated mookaite from the aussies, but they said they sold it all last year. I see your palm there. Got a piece of that too! ;-) I got my OJ from the guy in the Diamond Pacific building. He also has another shop in the flea market by the post office with more of the same stuff. Jeff's OJ was pretty sweet though, and he has some really nice quality bone. A few more mescalero jasper slabs managed to make their way into my bag again too - I'm such a sucker for that stuff. Willow Creek guy did seem to have better than usual material, at very reasonable prices. I can never find any of that stuff that calls to me though. The chatoyant dino bone was a patch on the corner of a huge big red slab. Now that I know what to look for (Thanks Tommy!) I'll be keeping my eyes out. Neither Jeff Hill nor the lady I bought it from seemed very excited about the chatoyance of the calcite cells, but it looks great to me! I think I got the sister slab to your purple passion slabs too.

I'll have to go check on that OJ when I go back. Probably be picked clean by then, but you never know. That's the problem with only going for one day...I don't have enough time to visit all the vendors and I miss stuff. Might be a good thing, though. I could spend sooooo much money...lol!

For some reason I've been hung up on that sentence. Reading and rereading it. Maybe it's my busy brain or just a computer glitch that seems to always put me back to your comment. I find it amazing that you and this group find me outgoing. I've never been considered a Social butterfly before. I owe this entirely to this group. I've actually never liked to may people, had to drink in social settings so large groups wouldn't overwhelm me. I get excited, yes, over our Meet N Greets. It gives me the opportunity to be around interesting, rock intelligent, like minded people. Stumbling upon this community has been such a blessing to me and my life. I can't wait to meet each and every one of you that I consider friends. Enough of the sappy.... blah blah blah.....

Well, just took time to reread all of the info in the thread. The maps and explanations were really helpful, and it seems to make much more sense to me now. I know I haven't been on much, but the flu really hit us just after Christmas and lasted through the first 10 days of January. Really no energy to do anything. In any event, I've got a couple of quick questions. Do we need chairs for Tony's BBQ? Any idea for sides? I'm going to be in Q all day, and I don't want to worry about food spoilage. I'm dropping a saw off to Tony when I get out there but I haven't figured yet if I'll go out there Thursday afternoon or first thing Friday (we're staying in Blythe). Will I be able to pull right up to his booth, or will I need to have a cart with me to haul the saw? If I can avoid taking a hand truck I'd like to, as it leaves me more room for other stuff. I saw the booth location on the map that Susan did, but does it have signage indicating it's the Idaho Rock Shop? I've emailed Tony, but I've also seen it mentioned that internet may be spotty at this time due to Pow Wow. Thanks in advance for any info. catmandewe@shotgunner Bluesky78987

Dave, you can back right up to Tony's booth. Just park regular, then find his booth (just look for the closest one to that big building you'll see, with lots of big saws out front - or just ask somebody where Tony is, they all know each other), then move your truck over there. Yes, you might want a chair for the BBQ. Just bring chips for the BBQ. Or cookies or something unhealthy from the central aisles of the grocery store. The drive from Blythe is about 20 minutes. I'd drop off the saw then, since Tony won't be awake yet if you want to drop it before going to pow wow in the morning. And, that will help get you oriented.
