fernwood I use PinchBails on my Preforms and I drill afterwards. It's agate and Jaspers and such, not glass. The glass should dill easier. If you are holding the dremel(?) by hand you can lay it over about 30 to 45 degrees and get a starter hole going and then start drilling and not have any drifting of the bit. I use a Dremel drill press stand and it works great. I my case the Bail will hide any light polish disturbance near the hole.

Yes, the glass will drill easier, but more potential for large chips and some play from the center. I use a Dremel, no press. Hard to get it started in polished material. Diamond bits of various sizes. Start small and work my way up. Some items I drill do not have the pinch bail, but natural cord. So it is a must that the hole be smooth and polished.

As I mentioned if you lay that drill at an angle with the bit contacting on it's side and create a small divot, it will be a lot less likely to drift on you. The tip will(should) stay in the divot. Of course I am using 1.5mm and 2mm drill so any chipping is small. For a Cord I suppose you are using a bigger bit.
I have had almost no blowouts, having drilled 2 to 3 hundred preforms. Not sure how the glass will react.
