Take my advice and make yours a digital microscope from Amazon. My $20 scope plugs into my laptop and delivers 40X to 1000x in high definition color. Makes viewing easier than an old eyepiece and you can hit the print button for hard copies of your favorite assemblages. Plus you can save everything to file and subfile.subfile.subfile, ad infinitum. OOOOOh, give us a live show while you are reading through RTH... at the same time. I am excited for you so best of luck.

Hi mohs, wow, it seems I am about three years behind on this. Never mind, its all good. I took the liberty of lifting a picture from the link you provided and have to say, with all these jewels I am a gazzilionaire. I'm gonna run down to the nearest beach, dammit there ain't no beach in Phoenix, well, go to Lake Pleasant and get a bucket of jewels (aka, sand) and take em' to London Gold and ask them how much will they give me for all the jewels I have in my bucket. Not sure what they will say though. Anyway mohs, thanks for sharing. Here are the jewels. I see rubies, diamonds, pearls, emeralds, tourmalines, amethysts, sapphires, dang, hey honey, we're gonna be rich. Cheers, johnw

I foresee RTH members sending you sand samples. I'll make the first contribution if you want... let me know.

@mohs posted the sand book quite some time ago and I was hooked.
We have a little microscope, and a strong light. “Jewels” is right. Amazing.
Microscope, lamp, and little jars of sand are at the ready. Never tire of looking at them.

I have some perfectly formed "round" sand balls I picked up on some island in Indonesia back in the day and want to see how those look magnified. Now don't get me wrong here, I am not refusing your offer of free sand, I just have to figure out if all 10,000 members decide to send me at least a pound of sand where I gonna put the stuff. Cheers, johnw

Pat, after seeing what the sand looks like magnified it's like being in another word and I can see how it can memorize a person. I get jazzed just at holding Lace Specimens that are 65 million years old, but sand, wow, that's eons. Sorta like visiting the crater in Nevada and touching the huge meteor they have on display and realizing its not of this world. Cheers, johnw

Run a magnet around the area where your downspout empties onto your yard. What you pick up are micro meteorites that have fallen onto your roof over the years and collected near the downspout ! Some of those are pretty cool also !

Cheers, johnw Just make your own beach. A never ending supply to gather and magnify. Hi fernwood, so let me see.......if I have 10,000 pounds of jewels, err, sorry, sand, dumped in my back yard I can tell the HOA sphincter police it's going to be my beach. Interesting proposition, since the HOA rules do not state residents can or cannot build a beach on their property so I am tempted to go ahead. BUT, an inner voice said " hey dude, do the math", so given that I listen to rocks and talk to myself quite frequently I followed the advice. So here is what I came up with......... 10,000 pounds of jewels (aka sand) multiplied by 16 to get ounces, equals 160,000 ounces. OK so far? So, if I am very diligent and can sort thru one ounce of sand per day, given there are in excess of 500,000 pieces of beautiful rocks in one ounce of sand, it would take, errr lemme see now.....160,00 ounces of sand divided by 365 (days in a year) assuming I do nothing else, equals, wait a minute, this can't be right....... 485 years.............. some how I don't think I could finish the job, and so, being the case, I gonna pass. Err, and just so you know, I did not spread all the sand in one ounce over the kitchen table to count, the 500,000 is a very reliable estimate. Cheers, johnw

johnw You can trade the sand duplicates to reduce storage issues. Having spent major parts of my professional career looking through dissecting microscopes at the details of vertebrates (mostly reptiles and bones) I easily grasp the wonders of microscope study of just about anything in the natural world. Try insects if sand get tedious.
