I've always kind of avoided those areas and have preferred a smooth surface. But this weekend I slabbed some really nice agatized petrified wood and right where I cut I hit a nice druzy vug and was inspired to cab what I got. I think I have changed my tune w/r/t voids. After seeing Tommy's collage, I'm like 99% certain I will try more!

I like to include crystalline vugs and other natural features when I find they're attractive. I don't like pits, cracks or ugly inclusions. I think using these natural features requires some judgment and creativity on the part of the cutter. Some are quite clever and often add to a stone's character and salability. However as the old cliché goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

After seeing Tommy's collage, I'm like 99% certain I will try more! That is a gorgeous cab with the sparkling crystals! I am honored to have been an inspiration.

I'm going to echo the "it depends" sentiment. They can sometimes add character, sometimes change a planned cab, and sometimes make me abandon a cab altogether. Like brecciated jasper, sometimes the is a wabi-sabi element (the beauty of imperfection), and sometimes it bothers me. I'd love to say that I have mastered the art of making druzy masterpieces a la Tommy, but not yet. Maybe I'll make a wabi-sabi collage, but it won't rival his.

Thanks! Fun topic that turned into a fun waste of a couple hours on a quiet Sunday morning I don't know how well this will view at the size it is but here goes. A collage of my favorite cabochons with vugs, crystal or otherwise. Some of these were vug-like; ie: I left the edges incorporating a natural vug or feature. One cab here is made entirely of the bubbly interior of a colorful vug. Enjoy That was fun! Thank you! Heres some favs I have weapped lately I couldn't see you wraps. I don't know if it's just my phone, but I would love to see some.

I agree that crystal pockets or voids can be useful when adding to the beauty or character of a cab when placed in the correct spot. I had carefully marked around(omitted) some nice crystal pockets in several Regency Rose plume agate slabs but then decided on second look that the crystals would look great in the cabs. Luckily, because we had moved, I had not cut the original cab outlines and then redesigned the cabs with some nice crystal pockets.

I couldn't see you wraps. I don't know if it's just my phone, but I would love to see some. Mine? Yes, it looked like you said that you had some you had wrapped recently. But I couldn't see any images on my phone. Now on my work computer it's the same. No images.

On the topic, I love the natural druzy pocket or live edge look. Haven't done but a few so far but it's something I want to do more of. One from this year.
