OK, so where is Sophia located? I might have some sort of cool info if they are in the right area. I might have done some research. Mark, I believe she is in Savannah, GA. Yes, Savannah.

We are in Savannah and will travel. Just would like accommodations near the rock hunting and collecting. Like a bed and breakfast, homey town with sights, etc..... Just not able to completely rough it.

Will look into this spot for a day trip. Also, going to look at some spots out west a bit that were recommended. Thank you all.

UPS, USPS and some duffle bags Would love to go out West. If I knew someone with a dealership out there we'd probably move.

Been there and done that and it is a great place to collect. You and your daughter will have fun collecting there and Augusta is 35 miles away. In the fall/winter I check to see if it's deer season in Burke County. Most of the land on either side of that dirt road is leased by hunt clubs. I always yield to hunters with guns when collecting areas are shared. Rick B

Will have plenty of warning. Need to know our distinguished guest's plans before dates can be set. This is actually quite complicated. I got you. I interpreted Jason's post as meaning he needs to pick a "vacation destination" type of place (Disneyland comes to mind) and look for rockhounding around it. I could be wrong though. If it does turn out to not be ideal for what Sophia and Jason need then let's spin it off into a new thread and not let it die because it's a great idea and will spark a lot of interest Barstow Rockhounding. Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Six Flags, Universal Studio, LA Zoo, The Arboretum, Hollywierd..... I live in a vacation town, with some of the best Rockhounding in the USA.

A late comer to the party. South Shore of Lake Superior. Beautiful country. Plenty of Bed/Breakfast accommodations. Bayfield is a quaint little town with beautiful accommodations. Take the ferry to Madeline Island. No collecting on the Island, but worth the trip. Travel North from Bayfield to Red Cliff Reservation. They often have cultural events. After that, there are other collecting spots on the way to Superior along HWY 13. Cornucopia, Port Wing and Saxon Harbor all have potential. Mostly Lakers, but other lapidary quality rocks can be found. Last years major flooding stirred things up a little, so who knows what surfaced.
From Superior head South. The Blue Hills area in Barron/Rusk Counties is a great collecting place. There are many groomed trails in the area, but most of the good spots require walking through County owned land. Plenty of County parks located next to lakes with rock filled beaches.
If you want to travel to SW WI fossil land, it could be interesting. There is a shop/guided collecting area near La Crosse.
I could go on, but this should be a good start.
