If you still want to try your larger boxes and then send at the SFRB price, order up some of these - they are free and USPS will deliver to a real address. I am able to "modify" actual SFRBs to make them thicker by putting two together and then insert them in the envelope which ships at an SFRB rate. As long as your item fits in the envelope, you should be good to go. I end up taping the flap which has great adhesive, just in case, but I've gotten no reports of any issues. If they are still marked flat rate then they should honor the price. Or look in to the padded flat rate mailers. I can get around 10 pounds of rock in these and they ship for $7.30. You order them from the USPS site. You can box up your slabs or whatever then put them in the larger envelope. Thank you both for this tip. Predictably I was not able to find a "Padded flat rate envelope" at my local PO and I didn't have time to wait for ordering them, but I was able to find the regular paper "Flat Rate Envelope" at my PO. I managed to stuff two tee-shirts into it and printed the Flat Rate Envelope label out through Paypal for $6.70 Even ONE of these shirts by itself would not have fit in a standard SFRB so I'm happy as can be right now ![(cheers)](//storage.proboards.com/1258779/images/JaWOk0IeEkImElgYrjAd.gif)

Shipping can be a nightmare, trying to figure out all the different ways and prices. All the SFRB's I have say they are SFRB on them so I guess I'm good for now. I never thought of putting a box in a flat rate envelope. I wonder if they think twice about it when they feel a hard box inside the envelope. I try to print postage through PayPal or Etsy since the rates are slightly reduced but have thought about trying out one of the other postage sites.
P.S. glad you didn't end up in a major accident on those slick roads

I wonder if they think twice about it when they feel a hard box inside the envelope. Personally, I can't see that being worse than the envelope being stuffed full of rocks and then taped up. I'm not being critical of that practice in any form or fashion. In fact, it was vegasjames who did this in sending stuff to me which afforded him being able to send about 12 pounds of rocks, in which he was not restricted by box size. Since seeing that padded envelope product, I've ordered a number of them. It's a great product, and it gives me a bit more latitude when I ship stuff off to folks. The Postal Service claim is "if it fits, it ships." It's still held true with its slogan when it comes to these envelopes.

I received a number of the FR padded envelopes in a MFRB recently. They were used as spacers/cushioning. So, I have about 8 of the envelopes.

Lining these with an extra layer of rid resistant plastic is a good idea to help keep in rocks with sharp edges. My mom orders from Amazon a lot so she saves me all the rip resistant mailers, which I use for secondary liners for this reason.
