The first rock does look like basalt. Odd mixup for sure. Looks like you got some nice pieces to play with. Appears more carving is done with the material. I would guess the carvers would have great advice.

Good question. There is an obvious place to cut in half, but I like the shape as is. Cutting might reveal how far beneath the surface there is fire (if more there).

You cant tell from the picture, but right down the middle is a thin clear layer If I cut it, I can get 2 cabs from it

Earlier post that said carvers would have good advice is right on the money. Best carver we know uses a dental lathe, but you could set up a dremel to use the same way. Strap it down to a solid base, put a gravity drip above it for water, and shield the tool from the spray. This lets you hold the stone with both hands so you can follow those #!*%$ chaotic little bubbles around.
Sawing across for two cabs looks like a good idea. The smaller end looks like a good one for a standard cab if you don't want to carve. That's all I ever do with Fire Agate. I don't have the patience to chase that color around.
The color layers on this stuff are incredibly thin, too. Sometimes there's a better color underneath - sometimes not.

Those are nice, your title of fire agate journey is very appropriate! I'm sure you'll figure out what to do with them and they'll turn out fantastic.

I got through some stuff and bam! there it was. I am going slow, grind, look, grind, look, grind, look repeat I dont think I will carve any-just make cabs These smaller pieces are perfect for me to get a feel for them The larger ones with lots of bubbles, I will hold off on for now

Any good inexpensive bits for my Dremel that I should get?
I want Nova Points but cant afford them at this time
Or should I take it down as far as I dare with the dremel and switch over to the arbor to finish?

I don't even bother anymore. Just gets all chipped up and looks bad within minutes. Makes more sense for me to just leave them natural, so when I'm showing houses I don't have to explain why my fingernails look wretched.

I work in healthcare so I always try to keep them nice during the week. Weekends are fair game and I usually tear them up. and I've been lazy
