I got a chunk of obsidian from woodman and took it out to cut I thought it was full of bubble but after looking at it more they actually appear to be white spots And there is some funky stuff going on when the light hits it a certain way Really wish the sun was out Thoughts?

Can you feel the spots with your finger? Longs like it might have some good color. I would see if they sand out or not.

Agree with Walt, you've might have some "micro-snowflake" going on. I think that comes from ash? "Funky stuff with light angle": You have some potentially gorgeous sheen going on there. There are lots of folks more experienced than I am, but if that was mine I would try to take a test cut at a small angle to those bands. Also looks like the bands have some curve to them, which can result in some lovely concentric ring effects if cut at the right angle.

Send it back to me and I will send another chunk, LOL. It does look a bit like rainbow. if the spots can be felt with your finger nail, they may sand out. What are you using for a saw?

You know I'll mail it back to you if you want I used the wet saw I really thought at 1st I cut it wrong, but dont think I did and Garrick didnt think so, as he is the one that advised me to cut it the way I did. He has way more experience with obsidian than I do. He didnt know what the spots were either. At first he thought bubbles but then said he wasnt sure I cant feel the spots at all with fingernail. I wont be able to get out there till next weekend to see how it polishes

Sunlight hitting it And a small piece of it I think you're going to be thrilled when you get some of that cut up and polished. That's some nice stuff right there.

Yeah, probably micro cristobalite flecks - same stuff that makes the "snowflakes" in Snowflake obsidian. Not really a problem, unless they are big enough to undercut when you polish. Sometimes you get micro-thin bubbles that look like this, too, in Silver Sheen types, but I don't think those are what you've photo'd. Your slab looks like it will be very interesting when polished.

I am cutting on this one as I type, looks similar to yours, but may not be the same at all. My pile is a mixture of different types.

I am finding I do not like taking low format photos to post on here. think I will go back to large ones and let cloudinary resize them with the presets or post them to my website then post here but that takes longer. can't win

I read that the snow flake effect is caused by rain drops falling on a previous ash covered flow and the water spots being formed when incorporated with the following flow.
If that made sense ?

Went to higher resolution for photos to post.

I use FastStone Photo Resizer to resize them to 600 x 800 after I download them. Takes just a second or two to resize all the photos at once. I just direct them to a new folder inside the one with the original photos that I always name "small" so I know they're the resized ones. Works a treat.
