Wanting to build a cabbing machine with a Stainless Steel shaft (using ss so the shaft won't rust). What type of stainless steel should I get? Are there any pre-made ss shafts for a cabbing machine available to buy? Going to have 6, 6" wheels. What length of shaft to buy for minimum 1.5" spacing between wheels, with pulley and pillow blocks?

Lortone sells all of the parts needed to repair their cabbing machines. Shafts, spacers, flange washers and pulleys. Their replacement part prices are actually very reasonable. Their stainless steel 6" 6 wheel unit is the SS66 model Lortone 12130 Cyrus Way Mukilteo,WA, 98275 USA Phone (425)493-1600

You can get a shaft from Covington as well, they are pricey in my opinion, you can upgrade to stainless for 10 bucks. 416 is a decent low corrosion stainless steel (stainless does rust if not maintained) it can be hardened easily if needed 24" shaft will get you 3 wheels between bearings, 2 inches separating wheels and 3 inches separating the wheels from the bearings. it also allows for a expandable drum on one end and a polishing head on the other with the pulley on the outside of either bearing If you cut it to 1.5" between wheels and 2" between wheels and bearings you could get the 5th wheel , the sixth wheel if you ditch the polishing head. Polishing heads come in handy for making flats

I highly recommend speedy metals. Their prices are fantastic, they don't charge for cutting (if you need six 12" pieces of something you pay for 6' and that's it). I was also told by a sales rep on the phone once that if you call the price is even better than online prices. Only thing I can't comment on is shipping charges. They have a shop local to me so I place an order & they call when it's ready for me to pick up. www.speedymetals.com

I built my cabbing machine with a 36" long 1" diameter shaft.
Looking on speedy metals this shaft would be $56.87 for bearing shaft quality stainless.
