I'm silent when they post lousy photos, a single photo, 95% background - 5% stone, lack of info like location, hardness, etc. Lynn so I am genuinely curious about this and in no way being factitious but, What if they dont know location? They know its an agate, ryolite, jasper etc. How many pictures are optimal? Does pictures of the matrix help in some cases? I know me personally I do a heck of a lot of trying to figure it out on my own and sometimes do not have a clue but want to learn and the only way I can do that is to ask Thank you As many pictures as it takes to display it properly. Yes, matrix always helps. A lot of times, location simply can't be known. So many look alikes come from so many different places.

Thank you I'm finding out theres a lot that look alike with subtle differences. Typing in yellow and red plume agate brought up so many it's hard to narrow it down.

Great conversation here. I often look at others postings to learn. Have been able to ID some purchased rocks based on the postings of others.
Based on comments to my question, I will be more diligent getting proper ID's on what I can.
