Here for your viewing pleasure is a group of 9, 30x40 cab preforms I am getting ready to dop. I’m sure most of you know this but for newer cabbers: Remember to mark the limit of your grind near the bottom of the cab to give you an even edge.

Bluesky78987I have no idea what that material is. I inherited a lot of rocks from my grandfather. It was something I slabbed last year. It looks kind of like marble but has a lot of agatey areas which are semi-translucent. It’s very solid and should polish well.

I got three roughed out today. Started with 80 grit hard wheel then went to 600 grit hard wheel. I’m really impressed with the 600 grit hard. It removes the 80 grit scratches pretty fast. Here’s one. That is the finish with the 600:grit hard wheel. It hasn’t seen any sanding yet. I like my cabs pretty flat. It takes a little more time on the 80 grit wheel but it’s easier to sand and polish later. thanks for looking. Don’t criticize my dops. They’re brand new sticks.

All of the preforms were trimmed with a heavy duty glass cutter. No need for a trim saw. It works good on most agates and jaspers. It’s not so good on tiger eye or Mexican lace. You can score the rocks very close to your preform lines. It even cuts slight curves.
