Hi there,
I have just started looking into rock tumbling. I have a few things on order, so now I wait for them to show up so I can actually try it!
I have been collecting gemstones in a variety of shapes for some time. The raw stones are interesting, but they also could use some help at times, so I thought I'd look at what I could do. Turns out I have a tumbler already (my dad used to use it for tumbling brass), so doing some research and getting some supplies, so I can try it out!
It's good to know there is a forum to ask questions and look around at different peoples advice and experience.

Welcome to the forum. Been up that way a few times. Not much in the way of stones to tumble unless you go over to Drumheller and get some dino bone. You are not too far from BC either, which has a lot of nice stones.

What type of tumbler did you father use to tumble brass.. rotary or vibratory? It's a vibratory tumbler. I just got it all cleaned out and I'm gonna try my first load in it tonight! Been doing a whole lotta research online. Though I don't have enough test rock to fill it halfway for starting... So I might have to use filler.

Thank you for letting us know minniek. You did not say which model vib you have... but some vibratory tumblers, like Thumler's UltraVib-10 and 18, have different bowls. One has a red stripe around the bowl to identify it as to be used for lighter endeavors, like polishing ammunition brass. Use of this red striped bowl to tumble stones is not recommended... it can be used for lapidary work but wears out rapidly. For Lapidary work, the bowl should be the Industrial model... with a blue stripe... it is much beefier and withstands vibrating stones well.

Doing some reading on here, I have seen that I likely don’t have the right bowl, and maybe even not a very strong motor... but it is what I have right now. I have a small load of rocks tumbling in it (enough to tumble around), though it is quite noisy, just to see what it does. I didn’t want to wait (Too excited to try). I dont know know exactly what I’m going to do with all them after they are tumbled so I didn’t want to invest too much if all I do is what I have (2 or 3 loads). If I catch the ‘bug’ and find something to do with the beauties (if they are) that come out, then I’ll look at investing in some better equipment to keep going. You our do have some great information on this forum, it’s quite a lot to look through!
