I had an unusual request from a work mate today to set a cab.
She is having her mothers ashes made into some resin cabs and would like a pendant from one. I have no idea what shapes or sizes that they will be and don't want to do any modifications to the cab or damage it.
I'm thinking a simple bezel setting or a cast (commercial) setting if it is a standard size, but I guess ultimately I will be guided by she would like.
I'm not sure what to think. I don't think it is the material that concerns me but the fact it is so personal, that I want to do it justice, but not over done.
Any thoughts, anyone had any experience with similar.

I have been asked to do something similar, but this person wants a ring and I'll be casting the cab as well. I think I'm going to do something like this for her, simple bezel set resin cab with her mom's ashes in the center, then on either side a small cab with her and her mom's birthstone on either side. I think a bit of color would be nice on something like this ring or a pendant.

With cab damage a key concern, I would set them in bezels on solid backplates and do it with a clear epoxy. I wouldn't bother pushing the bezels down onto the resin cabs, but rather choosing a bezel height that is just high enough without much gap from the cab's profile.

A ring would be nice, but I don't think it will hold up to wear. I like opalpyrexia's idea. Maybe you could ask about using a colored bezel cup to introduce some color?
I have some of both of my parents ashes and have considered something doing similar to this for each of us kids.

Rings take a lot of abuse. I would really worry about the resin. I would try to talk her into a pendant, or a doublet with a quartz cap.

I would say a simple setting for the pendant. See of she would like her mother's birthstone added.

fernwood I had been thinking accented by a stone of her favourite colour, some reason birthstone never even entered my mind. Thanks all for the ideas and tips on resin based cabs, it's given me some ideas depending on the shape and size The centre being the main cab, lower being birthstone and the cross representing her origins solid back with a embellishment on the rear with maybe a birthstone?? Will update, if it comes to be.

Maybe a colored bezel would be a good way to go... and opalpyrexia 's idea is a really good one I think.

rivarat I should have simply said that I was planning to use a birthstone for some color in the piece I was making for this person and I feel like I hijacked your thread with my ring project and I'm sorry about that. I'll look forward to seeing what you put together!
