I love day trips, especially if I'm searching for rocks, etc.
I'd love to plan a field trip, (day only) for Sat Feb 16th if weather permits! I know it's a Spur of the Moment request but my husband will be off work that day and what better way to spend time out?! I don't know where to find them, hoping that someone in this area would be of assistance? I hope someone will want to go Rock hunting......

Not much in the Las Vegas area or areas where you can collect. Most the area around here is private, State or National Park or preserve. There is a spot not far from here where you can get read or regular selenite crystals and some garnet bearing rocks (garnet amphibolite, garnet in various colored quartz) and actinolite (asbestos) specimens. Otherwise most collection spots are about 60-100 miles from here. I plan to go on a club trip to Arizona Sunday, but could probably go somewhere Saturday as well.
It would help to know what you are interested in looking for.

James , where in Az are you going ? Behind Rosie's Den between Las Vegas and Kingman. First they said turquoise then they changed that to chrysocolla but looks more like general copper ore to me. I want to go back to that area anyway because I know where to collect some really nice mica specimens.

</div>Several places to collect purple agate out this way. Mostly by Lake Mead off North Shore Road around the Southern Nevada Gemological Societies claim. They do allow collecting there. Details on their site.

</div>That is Valley of Fire, which is actually a State park and thus you cannot collect in the park. It is bordered by Native American reservation and the Lake Mead National Park so those are also off limits. There is BLM land in the area where you can collect, just make sure you are in areas where it is allowed.

</div> Yes, Buffington Pocket is a popular collection area. Lots of driving in washes and soft sand so a high clearance vehicle and preferably 4 wheel drive is preferred.
And don't go in to the washes if there is a chance of rain either there are even far upstream. Some flooding has occurred in our washes from storms that were even as far as 50 miles away.
Today we had over an inch of rain here in Las Vegas and over 3 inches at Mount Charleston just North of Las Vegas. The water will run down from Mount Charleston through the washes in Las Vegas. And do to all the caliche in our soil preventing water from penetrating the soil it takes very little rain to cause major flooding here. Use to be even a 1/4 inch of rain would cause major flooding. But they have built a lot of flood channels and detention basins in Las Vegas to control this. Not the case though for the areas outside of Las Vegas like Buffington Pockets. Just something to keep in mind especially if not from this area.

Let me know when you want to go. I can think of a couple of places with jasper and agate in that range. There is also Apache tear down by Searchlight and blue quartz and Chinese writing stone down by CalNevAri.
