Hopefully this isn't obvious, but my son was washing out his rocks and has this one tumbling. At the risk of sounding ignorant, what is it?

Looks like some sort of crazy patterned agate but I'm not sure on specific type.

Looks like fossil fibrous something - similar to some tree fern and fern root I've seen.

Really does look like fossilized shells in there. Any idea where it's from?

Really does look like fossilized shells in there. Any idea where it's from? Yep, where we always collect in the Oglala National Grasslands near here.

Sounds like it's a fossilly pink crazy cool agate... At least until someone else weighs in. Either way I need to talk him into letting me slab it.

Definitely agate. It has the look of fossilized shell fragments from some kind of pelecypod like Coquina. Quite a bit of that in the Rio Grande gravels here in south Texas. Could also be a multi-fortification agate where the external membranes have broken loose. Lenz, in his Agate Book calls those fragmented membrane agates ( a type of brecciated formation) and those too have a lot of those curved semi circular formations. I'd lean towards it being the second type....Mel

Funny thing is, my Grandpa used to teach Geology at a college in Colorado years ago. Sure wish he was still around or that I would have had more of an interest in learning about rocks when I was a kid. Thanks Mel.

Ok, just did a search for "Coquina Agate" and it sure does look like Sabre52 sure could be correct...

Sigh, as manofglass pointed out to me this seems to be the wrong color for Coquina Agate. Back to Google.

Could the smaller, line type areas be fossil larva? Just a guess. Take a look at the geology of the area. Determine what types of minerals could have caused replacement.
The more I look at this, those lines look like worms/larva to me.
