Could the smaller, line type areas be fossil larva? Just a guess. Take a look at the geology of the area. Determine what types of minerals could have caused replacement. The more I look at this, those lines look like worms/larva to me. It's a confusing one for sure! I like your theory I wouldn't have thought of that. I emailed the guy in charge of the rock club in this area hopefully he can help.

Still trying to figure this out. Now I'm leaning towards a fern fossil...maybe Came across this picture, it's not exactly the same but maybe close?

Here are some closeups of Tempskya tree fern from northeast Oregon. My pieces from that area (and fossil tree fern species have been found in many locations) are a different color, but tree fern trunks are a tangle of frond stems, tubes, rootlets and fibers not as organized as in true trees, which is what your piece brought to mind. Yours could be something entirely different. I didn't think "shell" because the shell itself is usually not completely replaced with agate (though the hollow interiors and surrounding material can be). Yours looked to me more like agate-filled tubes and agate-replaced fibrous material. I could be completely off-track, because there is something irritatingly familiar about the colors and patterns in your piece stuck somewhere in my brain. Unfortunately, the flash of recognition doesn't seem to be accompanied by a concrete ID.

@rocks2dust , that's exactly what I came across- Tempskya tree fern - that made me think it was some type of fern fossil. I'll keep trying to figure it out. Walt suggested I take it up to the college and talk to their geology department, I may do that. In the long run I suppose it doesn't matter what it is exactly, I just like to learn. Thanks for keeping it in mind- maybe it will come to you eventually Mike
