Hey all... I've got an older frantom grinder and need to make some risers in order raise the wheels and get some more clearance. Using 8" wheels. Im at a loss at what to construct this out if. Is there any advise? Painted/sealed wood? Maybe another retrofit part?

Don’t rule out the wood you mentioned either. A fine-grained hardwood like maple would be nice but a plain old 2 x 4 will do the trick too. Eight-inch wheel needs an extra inch of clearance and the two-by’s a comfy inch and a half.
Whatever’s handy or the price is right or you have the tools for.

Oops?
If you raise things up and get more clearance at the bottom of the wheels, what happens at the top and in the back?
Is there an inch of clearance there to avoid modifying the hood as well?

Coxxxy - Those Frantoms are made for 8" wheels. I'm not sure what you will accomplish by raising the wheels except for hitting the inside of the hood. Or do you want to raise everything but the trays? Lynn

Side and back extensions will have to be made to connect the gap and to seperate/ raise the hoods as you mentioned. This will allow longer knife blades to be produced as there will be more distance to the bottom of the pan. Right now I'm limited to about 4 ".

COXXY ~ Great crafted blade ! ! Perhaps an easier retro is to consider changing your wheels to 6 inch for more clearance. Our Lapidary Shop foreman renews quite a few of the vintage Frantom Combination units if you want to get some other ideas with your current project. Call CigarBoxRox.com at 541 280 - 5574. We have deep snow event today so next day he most likely will work is thursday february 28. I will try to remember to send you a picture tomorrow of a Frantom Combo similar to yours we just renewed to factory specs. Warm Regards, Tim Bend, Oregon
