I've been playing with a very pretty Aussie gift from a very generous Aussie friend I met up here! This is how (a small selection!) of it looked like when I received it: This is how it looks like now:
Thanks so much, pauls ! You guys on this forum really spoil us newbies way too much! <3 Just to illustrate the difference between high-quality hard agate from Australia (left) and the material I can gather around here in the European Alps (right), which is a couple of hundred million years younger and MUCH softer If we're lucky, we find stuff like this: But it's still nowhere near as stunning as those fantastic colors and perfect surfaces of real precious stones.
Once again, thank you!

Thanks for sharing Kai!
Looking at the rough sent to you from your friend in Australia, the quality is unquestionable, but it is also apparent that a good deal of time and effort was spent on shaping and grinding imperfections from them as well. Quite a nice gift!
But I actually do like all of your self-found stones from the European Alps. They have a lot of character too. Plus there is a lot of variety in those stones too! Myself, I would be encouraged by your efforts actually.

Wow that was quick Kai. Great job too.
I agree with Bill , some of those local stones are really nice.

They're not totally finished yet, they're missing the very final stages. I just wanted to brag a bit because I like them so much! Thanks once again, you rule!
Regarding the stones from around here: they may look nice at the first sight, but they are young, this means they are soft and crumbly, so in most cases they won't polish very well. The top two lines on my picture are okay (not even all of them). Everything below that just fell apart as you can see.

Beautiful, even if not completely finished.

Hey, guess who rose from the dead?! No, not me, my tumbling drum! I couldn't work with it for more than a month because the constant grinding actually made a HOLE through the lid! Like this: So all the water and sand and everything of course leaked and squirted all over the place. And being from a country far away it would take ages for me to order a new one and have a lot of complications with papers and import fees and all that ****, so it was actually easier to have one custom made for me! Here's my new baby, made of steel! You can compare it to the original one (black), the metal one is silver. So now I can go tumbling again, yeah!!
