Once again... confusion... (my alternate state of existence lol!) First... I am told that flux is necessary to promote a good bond by allowing the solder to flow (and facilitate solder flow between to dissimilar metals). Then... I am told that a flux prevents firestain and stops flow to other areas of the work piece.
It is confusing. Prips should not be called a flux. Its purpose is to prevent oxidation of the copper when soldering sterling. It would function very poorly compared to an actual flux.
I bought some Pripps already made just for use preventing firescale. My understanding was that you still needed some kind of flux. I had been using the Rio paste, but I really didn't like it.

Yeah, flux necessary for good solder flow. I use a paste flux, but not full strength out of its jar. I have a small amount in a small prescription HDPE bottle (with one of those pop-up caps so I don't have to deal with the threads). Prior to soldering it's often a little dry, so I add a few drops of hot water and stir it up. I apply it with a small, very fine watercolor liner brush.

Yes, I thinned mine out, too. I should get a jar like yours. Can you post or link to something similar?

Here's the bottle that I use. There's only a small layer of flux in the bottom, so I'd prefer one that was about 1/3 its height.

What is the opinion of Battems Self Pickling Flux. I have heard good things about this material. Amazon no longer carries it, but E bay still has and with free shipping.

Found these on amazon. I wanted small ones to make sure I used fresher flux. I had a bad habit of using old, contaminated flux. 4 oz / 120 ml Clear PET Plastic (BPA Free) Refillable Extra Low Profile Jar with Black Flip Cap Lid

I stopped at RIO the other day and they had two stacks of these for free. I put flux in one jar some sanding discs in a couple others and solder in a few more and still have a stack left. I think individually they are about an inch high and two in diameter. Just cheap plastic. But price was right. They have a terrible review. www.riogrande.com/product/stackable-2-dia-containers/635475

If anyone is interested in trying those little canisters Billy referenced, Dollar Tree stores sell them. Theirs have a variety of different colors. Part I don't like is you can't use them separately. The bottom of 1 is the lid for the next.
