We are tumbling our second batch of rough in a Thumler A-R1 bought for my daughter for Christmas. From the first time we used it, I noticed the barrel was riding against the white roller guide on the left side. I have tested the surface and it's level. I'm concerned that the constant friction is going to stress the motor. Anyone else experience this and have a fix?
Also, we just did a cleanout after pre-polish and I noticed black residue on my hands. I felt inside the barrel, and the black rubber on the interior is now very rough along the bottom edge and causing the residue. Seems like a good place for grit to get trapped and contaminate the next step. Did I get get a bad tumbler, or can I work with this?

Actually since day 1. I've even put a level to it and made sure it was level. I even have old dvd's that I've burned under it to counteract it. It still happens so every day I mess with it. Haven't noticed any stress on the motor but I have replaced the white washers.

I'm concerned that the constant friction is going to stress the motor. Anyone else experience this and have a fix? I have a Thumler A-R2 (same as yours but it's the dual barrel model) and I had the same concerns as you initially...I tried balancing as suggested above but that didn't work as the balance would change and the barrels would drift to one end or the other so I gave up on that. Someone suggested grease between the barrel and the white roller guides but I gave up on that too cause the mess wasn't worth it. In the end I just balanced it as best I could and the barrels rub on one side or the other...the white guides freewheel and the light contact between barrel and guide is not that big of a deal stresswise in my opinion. ..it's been that way 24/7 for over a year now with no noticeable signs of motor stress. I oil the tumbler and motor monthly as well...
