Maybe this is a dumb question but I've been known to ask dumb questions.
Can anyone tell me why prices I see listed for cabochons on Etsy always seem to end in odd numbers, like $59.39 or $75.86? I never seem to see round numbers. There must be a reason.

It may have to do with that odd amount covering the listing and fee cost

That or sales tax.

I don't get it either. I round all my prices up to the nearest whole number. They may have recalculated their prices based on Etsy's fee increases and USPS increases, but even so, I would still round up.

When I was an Etsy seller, I always rounded up to nearest dollar. I would do the same if I were still on Etsy and Etsy made changes.

There is a long-standing marketing practice of listing something as .99 rather than $1, but people see and think - wow, it's under $1. Goes the same for 24.99, 9.99, etc. Because even if it's one cent under, it's more tempting. Although mentally, I just round up when I'm buying.
The numbers you're listing are extra strange, but maybe they calculate their cost and add a fixed "profit" - no matter what that ends up being.
Either way - I like nice even numbers. That's how I post as an Etsy seller. My eye, as a buyer, would tend more toward something simple, such as $60, rather than the overly complicated $59.39.

Aside from the reasons mentioned, there is also the practice of using the number of cents as an internal reference. For instance, Costco flags products new items, items that will be dropped, seasonal items, etc. using those last 2 digits. Online sellers do that, too. There is a slight mental advantage to adjusting the price a few cents, and those +/- cents are nearly universal in retail. Most folks are capable of mentally rounding up or down, so it is not a big deal to me as a buyer. Sales tax is more insidious, and of course it gets rounded up, not down.

OK, I'll be the first to say I'm a digital dunce. My brain just doesn't manage this stuff easily. But I'm now even further confused.
I'm opening a new Etsy site and have uploaded 2 items so far. I listed one at $59.00 and another at $76.00. But when I published them on Etsy they came out priced at $81.94 and $108.33, respectively. Either I'm doing something dreadfully wrong or there's some mysterious thing happening I don't understand. Any help/explanations? TIA

I just listed 8 items and the prices showed up just like I wanted. Maybe you have some sort of shipping that is being calculated and added? Just guessing. Chuck

But after I posted I got a notice saying Etsy Listings is having an "unplanned" problem and is not available. That's likely the explanation. I'll post further developments. Thanks all!

The only thing I can think of is if the seller is in a different currency - ie: Canadian dollars or something. In those cases Etsy automatically calculates the exchange rate.
Other than that Etsy goes with exactly what you tell it to. In my case and for reasons I can't explain, I always go with whole, EVEN numbers that don't end in zero or six with the exception of $36. Don't ask, I don't get it either except that a price like $30 or $40 just seems too contrived or made up. I'm not sure what I have against sixes that aren't $36. I can't explain it, it's weird.

It gets weirder. I went into your site Tommy after you posted this and immediately found items priced at 72.22, 52.78 and 94.44, and that's just a tiny sample. What the 'ell's happening?

Thanks rockjunquie and Tommy. I think my location is correct -- I'll check to be sure. So far this has been a wild ride. Wish I could contact a real human being there to help sort things out.

I swear I called them last week because they would not release a 300.00 order! I was pissed and so was my client! Well, SOMEHOW, I managed to find their number. Since I typed the last message here, I have been looking. I found this 1 800 328 5933. I called it and it said they are NOT accepting calls. So, IDK WTF is going with them now. They only very recently got a number. Maybe they were inundated and had to regroup. The customer service has never been good. Not in my opinion, anyway.
