Oh woe is me. Went out yesterday morning and came back 2 1/2 hours later, itching ...... .....to steam up the three dozen Atlantic blue crabs that I caught here on the SC Coast - good eating. Rick B

Oh yeah! Some of my best memories were when my mom, sister and I would sit n pick a bushel of crabs every year when the Jimmies were nice and big. We had crab all summer. Chesapeake Bay Blue crabs. Of course, they were bigger and cheaper back in the day. I haven't gone crabbing or fishing in ages. I bet you had a blast!

Always have fun catching them, but the more you catch the more you have to pick out. I have a favorite spot on a creek that empties into a salt water river. The other day I literally had to fight off the alligators(5) as they keep wanting to get too close. Wife and I eat about a dozen crabs at the campground after we catch them. We do freeze the white meat in containers with water. I also make my own devil crabs, wrap and freeze in tin foil then vacuum seal. Rick B

Don't know that I would crab with them around. Saw enough of them in Florida and Georgia. Walking the park at Okefenokee was like walking through a horror movie. I know they are relatively safe to be around, but just the thought of them being feet away and hiding ready to lunge.... no thank you.

I have eaten Crab AND Alligator both. I know its illegal in most areas of the country to take gators but when it comes to gators ---------------------some laws were made to be broken ! Sooner or later I just know I would wind up in jail !
With a Greasy chin and paws, they are really delicious !

I checked on it and found out that it was a lottery system and folks from other states could apply. Come on down this fall - put one on the bbq grill. Rick B

Update - Went back camping along the SC coast for a couple weeks. Brought back 14 containers of frozen crab meat along with 54 deviled crabs. Crabs (182) were a little larger this time as can be seen in the photos - many close to 7" from point-to-point of the topshell. Done for the year, now back to rock hounding at Graves Mountain GA in Oct.

If I ever caught the crabs, I'd want them to look like that, too!

Nice haul o' crabs! Sounds like you made out well. Yummy critters! We catch stone crabs down here in the winter. Season is mid Oct to mid May, but you want the water to be cold(er) so we wait for Jan. Feb. and March.
You go to Graves Mt. for the iridescent hematite or something else? How is the hematite hounding there? Pretty slim now or can you still find GOOD specimens if you are willing to do the work (dig for 'em!)? Are there good hounding spots the public can get to or is it a matter of knowing the right private land owners?

Below is a link that will give you plenty of information/history/photos about Graves Mountain. Nice iridescent hematite can still be found with some digging. The rutile, lazulite, and pyrophyllite are said to be some of the finest in the world. Immense area to hunt and twice a year the caretaker has a rock swap and dig at the mine. Transportation to and from collecting areas is provided using four wheeler's. www.gamineral.org/ft/commercial/ftgravesmain.html
