Don't text and walk in the pasture. We headed out this afternoon to look for stones to tumble. About 50 yards out my phone dings. I check the text message. No big deal, right? When I look around my foot is about 18 inches away from a curled up rattlesnake! Move away carefully! No snake movement or sound. Huh? Is it dead? No!!!! It leisurely picks up its head and looks around. I think I woke it up! After a minute it decided to leave...disappeared into a small hole about a foot from where it was sleeping. NO TEXTING while walking in the pasture!!! Went on to find a few tumble worthy stones...

Not to worry for me, I have never sent a text message, actually I would not even know how. And you know, my life doesn't feel empty or that I am missing anything.

I grew up in WI way before cell phones. We had cows and you always had to watch where you stepped due to those green land mines the cows left. As Jim Stafford sang, "You gotta watch your step When you know the chips are down"

Wow! You sure were lucky.
A good heads up to everyone hounding out there where snakes and other deadly critters can be lurking.

I know a fellow from the southern US who runs his shotgun barrel over the the top of any log before stepping over it (when hunting). He is always worried about the snake on the other side that he doesn't see. He has lost a few dogs to bites. That would break my heart.

We used to swim with them in FL at the swimming hole. (Because we were stupid kids.) They were huge and not to be messed with. They weren't afraid of people. We all carried useless snakebite kits that our moms made us take and they made us feel invincible. How we never got bitten or killed, I'll never know.
Here in VA the moccasins are bad but I think the copperheads might be worse.

A very good haul, very lucky the snake was so sleepy & a good reminder to be aware of our surroundings
Yesterday morning my brother walked outside to go feed the chickens, was looking down & focused on his phone, when he heard a "huff", looked up and there was a young black bear about 15ft away eating the birdseed. By the time he got the phone turned around to take a picture, bear was across the road and into the woods.

The last few years there has been more bears in the yard then all the 30 years my parents have lived in that house. But then again the loss of the habitat has also increased. There is truth to they are more scared of you then you are of them. Usually they are gone and out of the yard as soon as they see a person. Doesn't prevent the heart from stopping though

At least here we only have polite snakes...no moccasins, copperheads, or racers. Your brother is lucky Mama Bear wasn't close!
