Some people get it, some don't. A coworker at one of my jobs was looking at the cuurent Tee Pee that I'm working on and asked how many hours I've put into it. He said I'd be lucky to get a $10 bill out of it, which may or may not be correct. Then he said I'm working for like $2 an hour. But I don't see it that way. If I use his figures I'm getting paid $2 an hour to do something I enjoy. Something that I'm passionate about.

Yup, it's a hobby and who can put a price on a hobby that you enjoy and that brings so much to your life? That person OBVIOUSLY doesn't have a hobby.
I know people who don't have hobbies. THAT I don't get.

Your hobby makes more sense than mine might to some people. My dentist and I spend every Summer weekend running up and down the Miss. River catching Fish and release them all. Fish fry ? Go to the store and (BUY) a big bag of Pollack !

Agree. If it was a business, it would be different. Obviously, finding and transforming rocks is something you enjoy. Am guessing the process is fun and relaxing for you. Something you are learning more and more about and getting better and better at.
Who knows, someday you may start selling some of your finds and transformations.

People judge a lot which they do not understand or they themselves have no passion for.
It just isnt his thing and that's ok, doesnt mean he is wrong any more than it means you are wrong, Just as fishing isnt for everyone, or reading a book, or horses, or crocheting, or painting or whatever, the only thing that matters is it makes someone happy and as long as it brings someone happiness then who cares what it is and that's how people need to start looking at things.

Work is something a person gets paid for. A hobby is something a person pays to do. My hobby was golf until I lost feeling in my feet. Golf is expensive with equipment, lessons and green fees and the product produced is memories and maybe improved fitness.
Lapidary is also an expensive hobby and the products produced would rarely cover the costs even if they were sold. I made cabochons for 20 years, spent a lot of money on the hobby (less than golf)and had no interest in selling.
You have less equipment than most here and you spend a lot of time making a cabochon, but it's not the product produced it's the process that gives you enjoyment.

Hobbies are personal and people do them for enjoyment, not for profit. There is no payroll involved.
Yeah, some people just don't get it.

You're absolutely right. And if I ever do happen to make a couple of bucks some day... Well, now, that would just be icing.

Yes ma'am you're correct. I don't judge him for it, I'm just saying that some people get the rock thing and some don't.

I like to say that I cannot wait to retire so I can be busier than I already am. I've worked with a number of people over the years who seemed scared to retire. Finances were not an issue they just did not know what to do with themselves, I cannot relate to that. I guess if I made it to sixty +/- with no interests besides the TV I might be afraid to die when I quit working too. Al

I've been retired for almost 5 years. I worked until I no longer enjoyed it which was at age 69. I hear about retirees doing volunteer work to keep busy. I congratulate them but I don't have enough time to do what needs to be done and what I enjoy doing.
I met my wife to be in 1978. We were both computer system analysts. In 1990, she decided that she didn't want to work anymore and decided to go back to college to get a degree in studio art. Lapidary is a cheap hobby compared to being a painter. She won awards in student art shows and someone made an offer on one of her paintings. It would barely cover the materials and her hourly wage for her work would be ridiculously low. A lot of her work was good enough for local galleries but she didn't want to deal with marketing her work. It wasn't a job and it wasn't a hobby. It was part of being an art student. In our family she is the artist and I'm the system analyst. It is mildly irritating to her that I have sold some of my work. I remind her that she never tried which was her choice. A cab takes less than an hour to make and generally the material cost is modest along with the revenue .

Don't fret too much about what the coworker has to say . Most of my hobbies are looked down on by the people whos hobby is pissing half their paycheck down the toilet at the local saloon . While I'm making pretty things that will last a lifetime or out seeing beautiful sight and making lifetime memories .

While I'm making pretty things that will last a lifetime or out seeing beautiful sight and making lifetime memories . Exactly and very well spoken. Many do not understand a love of rocks and transforming them. They do not know the knowledge and time it takes. Do not know the difference between hand crafted items and those that are dyed stones mass produced in foreign countries. I first try to quickly educate a nay sayer about the knowledge, time and effort that goes into a finished product. If they are still not convinced, then I let it go. If they want to spend $10.00 on a pendant that was represented as turquoise in sterling which is actually dyed howlite in silver plate, so be it. Those who understand are great and I love talking about my pieces with educated people.

A JOB is something you have to do to pay for the fun things you do with your life.
