Some of you maybe noticed that I don't have a generator. Here's a true story:
During one hurricane, my brother in law was running his generator. He had his windows open after the storm because, with the power out, it was pretty hot and humid. In the middle of the night, he heard some noise outside his window. He looked and saw 2 people looking in. (He also smelled them, believe it or not.) He grabbed his shot gun and readied to shoot someone. Of course, that ominous sound scared the bejezuz out of them and they took off running. He has never run a generator again.
It is fact that generators make you a target. With no power, everything is really quiet. You can hear a generator a mile away. Sure, you can shoot someone, but do you really want to kill someone? Not only is it messy, but in an emergency, there will be no police and victims have friends. I will shoot to kill if I have to, but I will avoid it if I can. So, I have great battery packs and quiet, portable solar panels. All of my emergeny equipment have the watt and amp requirements written on the bottom in sharpie. I have a big battery fan meant for kennel cars. Puts out a lot of air. If there is one thing to learn about these storms it's that after they blow through it is really hot and humid with no A/C. So, we have several fans and a ton of rechargables.

A new name for you: Ms Hurricane Preparedness Lady.
I have been thinking about you a lot and wondering if you were going to be impacted. Stay safe.

I'm pretty sure we'll be fine- if it doesn't deviate from it's course. That's the hard part- the last minute wait and see. I have seen them take a turn in the middle of the night and come right over us.

Sorry about the beer.
There's not much else to do when the power's out.
Hope you don't get much of anything from Dorian. I've been watching the Weather Channel to see what it's doing. Florida and Georgia got pretty lucky as it skated by. The Carolina's look like they may get hammered pretty good. I just hope it stays off shore.
Stay safe!

Carolinas always get hammered. The Outer Banks always save our butt. The storms hit it and the Gulf Stream slingshots out into the open Atlantic. But, once in awhile they slip through. Seen some good ones here. My brother in law actually lost everything about 15 years ago. No one even predicted that they would get hit like they did. It's a little north of me. We were spared, but the way the storm behaved, they ended up underwater. Doesn't take much water in a house to render it destroyed. His was on stilts, but they still had 4 feet of water run through it.
I am so gonna miss the beer!

I saw some footage on Weather Channel yesterday of a house that had water coming up stairs to second level. Waves were pounding second level windows.

Good Luck Tela. As I was reading your first posts I wondered why it would be an issue if other people could hear your generator and why you'd need to shoot anybody. I had some images of Zombies trying to get in and eat you and the family!
Is it safe to assume you don't want anyone to hear your generator because they want to come steal it and don't have an issue taking you out in the process? This is an amazing story of the things you just wouldn't think would happen until it's too late.
I don't drink either, so you're in good company, right?

This is an amazing story of the things you just wouldn't think would happen until it's too late. I don't drink either, so you're in good company, right? They say it only takes 3 days for people to start acting like animals in an emergency situation. Yes, a generator makes you a target- esp if you don't live in a very good neighborhood. The bad guys figure you must have something and must have money and be prepared (unlike themselves).
We had a hurricane come through a while back. There was no gas to be found. None. So, what do you think the people bitching and complaining about it were doing? They were waiting in line at the drive through with their SUVs to get their food from the only McDonald's open (with generators). (Some) people do stupid things and people will resort to the worst measures ratter than do without. MOST people DO NOT prepare. It is just a fact. They refuse to take responsibility for themselves and rely on others or other means to get what they want and need.
Having said all that- My daughter has a whole house generator (and weapons). It came with the house. It's natural gas and pretty quiet. I wouldn't have one because I don't live in the greatest neighborhood. I mean, it's good, but there are some sketchy people.

julieooly Just saw this on the BBC. I hope it plays right. A woman is talking about how things are breaking down in the Bahamas already.
Dorian triggers 'pillaging, looting’ in Bahamas A woman fleeing the Bahamas hurricane says people are trying to shoot each other for supplies.
It takes a lot less than what happened in Bermuda for people to freak out.

Already lost power. Hope it won't be off for too long.
Lots of wind so far, but not bad. Lots of big stuff hitting the roof. I have a big oak in the yard. Not much rain. The storm is still a ways off yet.

Did not want to like.
I find it amazing that some do not secure items when a tornado or hurricane is approaching. Tornadoes and straight line winds have less notice than hurricanes, but still.
Stay safe my friend. Hope your roof does not receive much damage.

Hang in there, Tela! Just saw that the storm has weakened to 90 mph. It should continue to weaken now and head farther east soon. Fingers crossed that you suffer no damage and you all stay safe and sound.
