They've got a guy in Virginia Beach on the Weather Channel. He's at the beach. Said Dorian won't be past you guys until this afternoon/early evening. Glad to hear you are doing ok. Check in when you can.
Winds at the beach are 37 mph with gusts at up to 51 mph at the moment.

Sure, you can shoot someone, but do you really want to kill someone? Not only is it messy, but in an emergency, there will be no police and victims have friends. Often. No police means more time to dispose of the body/bodies! Get one of the small Honda i2000 generators. VERY quiet and efficient. Nice to be able to run the 'fridge/freezer(s) and TV/computer. The big honkin' construction generators are noisy as all get out, guzzle gas and are not designed to run sensitive electronics and appliances, like the Honda pure sine wave units. Hope the seaward path continues and we have seen the last of this round.

Some of you maybe noticed that I don't have a generator. Here's a true story: During one hurricane, my brother in law was running his generator. He had his windows open after the storm because, with the power out, it was pretty hot and humid. In the middle of the night, he heard some noise outside his window. He looked and saw 2 people looking in. (He also smelled them, believe it or not.) He grabbed his shot gun and readied to shoot someone. Of course, that ominous sound scared the bejezuz out of them and they took off running. He has never run a generator again.
It is fact that generators make you a target. With no power, everything is really quiet. You can hear a generator a mile away. Sure, you can shoot someone, but do you really want to kill someone? Not only is it messy, but in an emergency, there will be no police and victims have friends. I will shoot to kill if I have to, but I will avoid it if I can. So, I have great battery packs and quiet, portable solar panels. All of my emergeny equipment have the watt and amp requirements written on the bottom in sharpie. I have a big battery fan meant for kennel cars. Puts out a lot of air. If there is one thing to learn about these storms it's that after they blow through it is really hot and humid with no A/C. So, we have several fans and a ton of rechargables.
Seems like lights on at night visible from outside would be just as big a target. A virtually silent generator is easy, back in the day my friend with the weed garden in his basement used a generator for the gro lights, we just built an exhaust system that silenced it and ran it up his gas water heater vent. Hold onto your hat and keep your powder dry. Scotch and water is keto friendly...

At times, disasters can bring out the best in people. But, more often than not, it seems we see the dark side of people. Changing times. Consider how much pain and damage could be avoided if people would just take responsibility for themselves and prepare, instead of waiting for others to do it for them.
We don't have hurricanes, or tornados here. In the almost 62 years I have lived here, no even minor earthquakes to speak of. My toy hauler trailer sits on my driveway all the time, it has a built in generator. When the power was out FOR LESS THAN A DAY (seems like it was so much longer, lol) a few years back because of some switching mistake in AZ that put much of SoCal in the dark, we ran the genny overnight, and plugged in just a few essentials: refrigerator, freezer, and an extension cord to run the old dog's fan! It was in September, and, like now, hot and sticky.
Hope everyone on the east coast affected by Dorian remains strong and rides it out. Even after the storm is long passed, you will most likely need to deal with insurance adjusters. Ugh.
As an aside - captbob , with your months long, sometimes years long, periods of being AWOL, I didn't think you would ever reach 8000 posts. Congrats! (More time to dispose of the bodies, hysterical!)

Your butt is surely not fatter than mine, lol. I've got more posts, but not a bunch of zeroes right now.
8000 posts, and it only took you 11 years and 7 months. Got a few new members that will be crossing that threshold in a year or two. (For better or for worse.)

Had to look up just how long ago that was. Almost 8 years to the day, September 8, 2011. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Southwest_blackout Our power was out for less than eight hours. Had never experienced anything like that before, and not since.
Hang in there, Tela! Hoping it will be over soon, and you'll not come out the worse for wear.

Ok, well that's done.
rockpickerforever and captbob Thanks for the entertainment. I was checking the board, but wasn't on long enough to comment.
Now that we have the power back, I want to rant about a pet peeve. So, there we were playing some spades and the power comes back on. We know because we left a light on to alert us. Everything else was turned off when the power went out. Sensible thing to do, right? Yeah. As soon as the power came back, we promptly blew a transformer and had to wait another hour and half because idiots left their stuff on!!!!

This thing’s like the Eveready Bunny.
Offshore, gonna pick up some steam again and “likely to be a hurricane at landfall in Nova Scotia.”

rockjunquie , isn't that the way it always is? Those are the same idiots that didn't prepare before the storm. Well , glad it is almost over for you. Glad you are safe.

Yay! You survived Hurricane Dorian. Guess you have to get the T-shirt now. My sister's were in SC when Bertha came through. They both came home with those T-shirts. Yahoos.
Glad you're power's back on (in spite of the a-holes who left all their stuff on).
Speaking of pet-peeves, I've been watching the Weather Channel as you know, which I normally won't do because of all their global warming crap, and I hear that they are rescuing people from Okracoke Island in NC because the idiots didn't evacuate even though there was a mandatory evacuation. In AZ, when someone needs to be rescued because of their own stupidity (usually hiking or climbing up a mountain in 100+ heat with only 1 bottle of water), they get billed for the helicopter and rescue crew that had to come bail their sorry butts out. Do they do that by you in mandatory evacuation situations? I hope so!

As it should be! The general population should not have to pay for the stupidity of idiots.

There's some diehards down there. Every time someone survives a storm, they think they can survive every one of them. Eventually, your luck gives out. I don't know if they get charged or not, but we are usually told here that if you are told to leave and don't, then no one will be coming for you if you need it during the storm.
I only had to evacuate once. Those idiots wanted us to go from 7 miles from the beach to a couple blocks away in a conference building made of glass. Can't make that sh*t up. During the height of the storm, I went to the outside corridor where the windows were and the glass (or whatever it was) was flexing in and out, like it was breathing. I remember the Red Cross was there and was charging for blanket use, hot coffee and donuts. Talk about sh*tty. I will never go to a shelter again as long as I live. It was awful. If my kids hadn't been so young, I wouldn't have gone at all.
This area is largely spared of a lot of damage because of the Outer Banks. We get just enough from hurricanes to make for some great and memorable hurricane parties, though. Although, to be fair, there has been plenty of damage and lives lost, but we have been very, very lucky. The worst case scenario is having one come in from the Atlantic to the mouth of the bay forcing all the water up to Richmond and then flooding back down again. That's the nightmare. Only Felix posed that threat since I have been here (1977). It wobbled off the coast seeming to make a beeline for the bay, when it went back out to sea. I think that was one of the storms that Pat Robertson claimed to pray away. I packed all my belongings in a UHaul and headed away. That one really scared me. Gloria (85)was the funnest. I lived on the Chesapeake Bay at the time not far from the mouth. The bay was across the street. We had a BLAST! I almost killed myself swimming in it. The waves were coming over the seawall and filling the hotel pool across from me with saltwater. Oh, the memories.
Honestly, Nor'easters are what kicks our butts. We had a double Nor' Easter come through one winter and drop a blizzard on us. I swear to God, no one saw it coming. I went to work as usual only to be sent home in a blizzard a few hours later. Yeah, Nor'Easters are scary here.
Anyway- that was all more than you wanted to read, I'm sure.

I can understand not evacuating on the mainland if you're generally not in an area with massive flooding and are far enough inland. I'm sure now the shelters are chosen with a bit more common sense, especially after the fiasco that was Katrina. Social media makes it way easier to show anything negative and we all know politicians aren't in the business of making themselves look bad.
Being on an island though, with a Cat 5 hurricane coming at you and no one able to figure out what it's going to do, is a whole different ballgame.
I personally will never donate to the Red Cross because of their shady reputation. The Salvation Army gets my support, though. They do good work.
