Tough to say exactly what it is. In your area things got "imported" by the glaciers. If a lot of similar material was found in a specific area it might help someone with local knowledge ID it for you.
Unless it's a "pet" I'd have already been skinning it to see how the various areas might work up and to figure out which way to slice it.

Thanks, I'm not too sure what to do. I am soaking it in white vinegar, soft water, and dish soap to see if anything else can be revealed: I gave it a scrub with baking soda earlier and some of the red came off. The rock came from a gravel pit and I have not seen anything like it before. I'm a little hesitant to make any marks on it yet but I may try to take a small chip out to see what is inside.

I'm wondering if it might be an eroded piece of stromatolite. Rather than chip it, try cutting it in half to see whether the pattern goes through. A tile saw (if you don't have one, then perhaps someone you know who has done any tile work lately might have one that you can use).

It looks like an interesting Iron stained rock.

does the surface texture feel gritty or smooth? It kinda looks like a sandstone to me but could also be a worn dolostone rock with various staining patterns. Did you notice any fizzing or bubbling when you put it in the vinegar?

Is it grainy? It looks like Iron stained sandstone to me. Not having a fresh fracture make the diag hard.
