UPDATE- To combat the annoying and ill fitting donation buttons on the page, Susanne has come out with a book, available on Amazon, the proceeds of which will go to research. I got mine yesterday. It will make an excellent addition to my library. I have yet to delve into the meat of it, which is substantial. I have just been over the images. Book images at the end of the thread. ------------------------------- A woman I have worked with for a while now has started a new non profit site "dedicated to the preservation, appreciation and research of this rare material". She just started it and has a lot of very good plans. Her research and introduction page are really good. I am a huge OJ fan, so I am really excited to see this resource and to contribute photos, etc. If you have any great specimen cabs or slabs, she would love photos. I hope you visit and bookmark to watch it grow.
I work with another woman who is writing a coffee table book on the (short) history of OJ. I put the two women together to collaborate on research.

No offense meant, but maybe some sarcasm intended. How is this a non profit? She is taking donations uh... to buy rocks? Wish I had thought of this! Send me money and I'll buy rocks to "preserve" them and post some pictures on a website I created. Some nice pictures of OJ there, but this seems like maybe it should be more of an Ocean Jasper blog.
The Paypal "Donate" button to support her hobby/passion/quest seems a tad questionable - to me. Am I missing something here? signed: cynical old rock guy

I hear ya. The website is new and needs a lot of work. She is basically just getting it off the ground and I will be watching.
If you read it on the site, the site is trying to make purchases to send for mineralogy study and to get some into museum collections.
This is my big thing, she is attempting to break it all down and actually grade ocean jasper, which I find to be a good thing. Ocean jasper is so wildly variable, that I welcome the study, definition and grading of the different types.
Lastly, I believe that she is trying to do what she says she is trying to do. She is bonkers about ocean jasper and passionate about the site. Whether or not it pans out long term remains to be seen, but I support her and will try to help out.
If I didn't know her, I would be more skeptical myself. As it is though, I am just looking forward to an authoritarian source understanding, buying and selling OJ.

okay... ( hope ya saw this coming!) How is she qualified to do this grading?
Sounds like trying to judge the Miss Universe pageant or pick the nicest car at a car show. Judging/grading is highly subjective. Which is nicer, the 72 'Cuda or the 68 Camaro? Also if she comes up with her own grading system, what does that mean? Is it going to be accepted by others?
Beauty, I've heard, is in the eye of the beholder. You call her "an authoritarian source". How so, I didn't see anything on the website other than "I have a research background in physics and engineering." I also have the internet and "research" stuff every day! - send me money! I may appreciate seeing pictures of higher quality Ocean Jasper, (or ANY other nice rocks) and while I understand she may be your friend/acquaintance, I don't know her from Eve and would, hopefully understandably, be a little dubious of ........ heck of everything! I wish her well in her endeavor, and as I said will enjoy the OJ photos, but the Donations button just - TO ME - makes the whole thing "questionable" (to be nice). Bottom line is she is still asking for money to support HER hobby/passion/quest.
The website could have just as easily been dedicated to old Coke bottles or Star Wars action figures. In this day and age of people wanting everything for free - e.g. "other people can pay for my (fill in the blank)" - the similitude to a sketchy Go Fund Me page story kinda negates the good intentions and cheapens her site.
MY opinion just sayin' I'm done!

If you go to this page and scroll down- you can see how and where she is going with an attempt to grade it. There is a chart for what has been sold and a chart for the different types. Elsewhere (maybe on that page), she has discussed each type and when and where it was found. It makes sense to start from somewhere and she is starting with what has been sold and an estimate of what may or may not have been available. She admits this is an estimate, but it is a starting point.
Believe it or not, there is not much information about the history of the mining operation and where exactly OJ was found. She is attempting to do real research. After an entire picture is discovered, it would be easy to come up with relative values based on how much there was-- for one. I think she has made a great start with what available information there is (see footnotes and references).
No one has to believe in what she is doing and trying to do. I do and I hope she is successful in completing it. I want to make some assertions about the product I sell with confidence and authority with a place for reference.
I agree with you about the donations buttons. It does look cheap. But, it isn't my site. I wouldn't do it quite that way. But, I would like for people to support what I'm doing if they wanted to.
It is her passion for ocean jasper that drives her to do what she is doing. If she had no passion, why would she want to do it to start with. Makes no sense. I can't discount her because she loves the material when it is practically a prerequisite.
eta- She is not my friend. She is a woman I have been dealing with for a long time and someone I talk to a lot about OJ. She knows her stuff and has MANY MANY resources in people who deal extensively with OJ. Her contacts are enviable.

Give the big, heavy book a look . . . authoritarian vs. authoritative.

Sorry for the big pics. Susanne has taken a LOT of heat and ugliness for doing this. I commend her for sticking to her guns and doing this for the future, when there won't be any OJ left to talk about.

Well, not all. At the back are lists of research that still needs to be done, information on what is out there on the web etc.

My wife has her own OJ protection project. She won't let me cut this slab or sell any cabs I already made with other slabs of this material.

Hard to judge by its cover No need to buy the book, it is all here including the photos: www.oceanjasper.org/index.htmMost people want to do something important with their lives and she is doing a good job. I need to respond to this post. I am the author of the book referenced and the book is not freely available in the public domain. I had preliminary drafts published with a copyright on OceanJasper.org, a website I have built supporting preservation and research of OJ. Those preliminary drafts have been removed and all final work has been published in a copyrighted book available on Amazon and Apple Books. It is the first published book on Ocean Jasper, and it includes my own theory of formation with many cited research references. All net proceeds from sales of this book go toward research funds that pay for detailed tests of samples from the many specimens I have available to me, in a collection I built over the years. These tests are expensive. I just got back SEM/EDS test results from 13 samples from 6 specimens and another round of XRD tests will follow. These are the first tests of OJ specimens that I know of. Total cost: $780. Most of this will be out of my pocket. The book proceeds help. When I order additional quantitative tests on more samples, costs will run into the $thousands. I will be publishing these results on OceanJasper.org and on Mindat.org. I used to be a research professor at a University and the way research got funded is through government grants, i.e. taxpayers. This isn’t taxpayer funded research, it is currently self-funded with a little help from the book proceeds. Someone here complained about the donation tab I had on my website, so I removed it. I asked for donations for research test costs, not to buy collector material. That was very clear, but somehow it got parlayed into my asking for funds to build up my collection. I have indeed spent $thousands on specimens but it is my own money and many of these specimens will be donated to a mineral museum or research institution, not resold to the highest bidder. If you are interested in supporting this work, buy the book. My thanks to Tela for her kind promotions of my site and this book, here and on IG. I am one of her customers! Susanne Lomatch OceanJasper.org Author of “Ocean Jasper: A Natural Wonder and a Geological Mystery” P.S. I am not on this site often, I can be contacted via contact[at]oceanjasper.org. Thanks.

Hi Susanne, and thanks for correcting me. I did buy your book and treasure it. Those little spheroids have much to tell us - IF we can learn to read their messages. This 100lb chunk of obsidian is in my back yard. Note the spheroid "trains." The spheroids are assembled on the glide planes, then distributed into the glide layers. Each layer takes a heating/cooling cycle. How long did that take? The magma is constantly evolving, and the spherical feldspar layers capture the new excesses shown as the colors change. The flow planes occurred in the magma chamber, in th throat, and as they flowed on or near the surface. many of those direction changes are captured in Ocean Jasper.
