I would like to add to this thread that I also know idahocollector Susanne Lomatch outside of the forum and greatly respect her passion and knowledge on this subject. I trust that what she says about the research expenses is truthful and accurate. FYI - I've added Susanne's book to our Amazon ads that run at the top and bottom of the forum. I think it's a win win win if we can help her sell a few books and support the ongoing research while at the same time trickling a little bit of Amazon revenue back to the forum. The point is... BUY THE BOOK! It's only $24 If anyone does not see the Amazon ad for the book please feel free to disable your ad blockers and they will magically appear I hand-select all ads that show on the forum to be non-intrusive (no blinking banners lol) and for their relevance to our hobby.

No need to buy the book, it is all here including the photos: www.oceanjasper.org/index.htmMost people want to do something important with their lives and she is doing a good job. I need to respond to this post. I am the author of the book referenced and the book is not freely available in the public domain. I had preliminary drafts published with a copyright on OceanJasper.org, a website I have built supporting preservation and research of OJ. Those preliminary drafts have been removed and all final work has been published in a copyrighted book available on Amazon and Apple Books. It is the first published book on Ocean Jasper, and it includes my own theory of formation with many cited research references. All net proceeds from sales of this book go toward research funds that pay for detailed tests of samples from the many specimens I have available to me, in a collection I built over the years. These tests are expensive. I just got back SEM/EDS test results from 13 samples from 6 specimens and another round of XRD tests will follow. These are the first tests of OJ specimens that I know of. Total cost: $780. Most of this will be out of my pocket. The book proceeds help. When I order additional quantitative tests on more samples, costs will run into the $thousands. I will be publishing these results on OceanJasper.org and on Mindat.org. I used to be a research professor at a University and the way research got funded is through government grants, i.e. taxpayers. This isn’t taxpayer funded research, it is currently self-funded with a little help from the book proceeds. Someone here complained about the donation tab I had on my website, so I removed it. I asked for donations for research test costs, not to buy collector material. That was very clear, but somehow it got parlayed into my asking for funds to build up my collection. I have indeed spent $thousands on specimens but it is my own money and many of these specimens will be donated to a mineral museum or research institution, not resold to the highest bidder. If you are interested in supporting this work, buy the book. My thanks to Tela for her kind promotions of my site and this book, here and on IG. I am one of her customers! Susanne Lomatch OceanJasper.org Author of “Ocean Jasper: A Natural Wonder and a Geological Mystery” P.S. I am not on this site often, I can be contacted via contact[at]oceanjasper.org. Thanks. Hello Susanne! Glad to see you found the site and thread and that you added your post. I am so happy to see what you are doing for the preservation and study of OJ. It is so unique and so poorly understood.
1dave is one of our biggest rockers here. He has put hours and hours into serious study himself. He routinely shares his knowledge and makes himself available for discourse on many subjects. I feel I have gotten to know him pretty well. I didn't read anything negative into his comments, rather, I felt like he was urging people to go read the site. I would very much appreciate reading any discussion y'all might have.
As always, I fully support what you are doing and wish you success in doing it. (I haven't forgotten about the black OJ, either. I very much loath cutting it.)

Thanks for joining in Tommy ! OJ is so unusual, but few in the scientific world will bother with seriously studying it. I am grateful someone with the background Susanne has is willing to tackle this project and she deserves all the support we can give her! Dave
