Got this on an estate buy. The guy was 92 and he said it was given to him by a cab maker. He said it was absolutely the best he Ever used for polishing stones using duamo d paste. I didn't know it was for opals until I seen one last week at a rock shop going out of business. The lady said it was an opal polisher. Any one ever use one?

toiv0 It could be Blake's Original Compact Gem Polisher, uses diamond compound polish on hard maple drums --- for all gem materials. Quiet. No water. Excellent for jade, no orange peel or undercutting. Polishes opal and other heat sensitive tones. I can mail you copies of the paperwork if you like.

Not sure of the brand. It's called a spool polisher and Graves Co. still sells them. I used one for cutting star garnets from Idaho because they tended to chip on my regular wheels. These polishers are very gentle and can be used to polish nearly everything including opals. In fact I bought one of the very first Pixie machines from Diamond Pacific a l-o-o-n-g time ago and it used similar spools for the polishing operation.

We have one, too, but have never used it. Got it at an estate sale with a bunch of other stuff. I may have to pull it out if it will work on jade. Jade hates me.

hopefully the guy had the sense to label which diamond grit goes on which wheel segment. These are great units for polishing Rubies/Sapphires (star type). They do a great job for that but are too slow for regular agates and jaspers. I use a Diamon Pacific unit to do all stones except rubies/sapphires. these I take down to 1200 on the DP machine and then finish on the spool polisher.

I think the newer spool polishers are phenolic rather than wood. It has to be a good design if they've been around this long.
