Greetings and Salutations,
Ty and Ro here. We live in the Richmond, Virginia area and we are very new to the whole idea of the lapidary arts. We have been collecting rocks, minerals, and gems in various forms for years. Recently, we went to a theme park which offered us the opportunity to sift some rocks out of the dirt in a water flue; it was awesome and exciting. We loved what we found and were yearning for similar experiences. Miss Ro found us a mine called Lucky Lake Gem and Mineral Mine close to us in Virginia. We were able to get a glorious assortment of rocks and gems. More importantly we were able to speak with the gemologist who cuts the stones into gems. (forgive us if we don't use the proper jargon) She told us a little bit about tumbling rocks into beauty and next thing you know we were on "the" google looking for DIY ways to create beauty from the stones we have collected. It has only been 2 days since we went to the mine and so far we have looked into purchasing a vibrating tumbler, rotating tumbler, rock polishing buffer machine, dremel hand held, some books, and refitting our bench grinder or buying another one. Which inevitably brought us here as someone answered the question of whether we could use our bench grinder to get stones from rough to polished. We are really not sure where to start with our purchases but we are anxious to get started. We will be looking through this forum for the next couple of days to familiarize ourselves with everything and everyone. Thanks for having us!

Hello from Virginia Beach, neighbor! So happy to hear you found some rocks out there. None here.
Before you buy and after you do research, make sure you post for opinions here. Could save you a lot of time and money.
So, yeah, sounds like you got bit by the rock bug. Don't worry, it's only mildly contagious and not fatal, though it may cause you to overdose on rocks.

Welcome to the forum. One quick thought is you don't need to buy everything at once and might want to join a local rock and mineral club who have machines you can use and most important will likely be filled with experienced people who can offer guidance Collecting your own rocks is the best! I am still low on the learning curve when it comes to turning them into gemstones. However, I love putting stones into a rotary tumbler to see how they polish. Lots of good people on this forum to help you down your path. Warning - it is addictive. ;-)
