So I had an idea and I'm wondering if it's a good one or a bad one and how best to implement it. I'm sure I'm not the first to think of it, but I was thinking about taking the larger transparent/translucent cabs that I've made and wrapping them with a different purpose. I'd like to make these so they could be hung from a rearview mirror, allowing sunlight to shine through and show the true beauty of the stone. One drawback that I can see is that if it were hanging too far down it could bump the windshield and shatter the cab. Any input would be appreciated, and thanks!

I thought hanging stuff off the rear view mirror was not legal some places. How about wind chimes something like this:

Not sure if it is illegal or not, I think it is one of those statutes open to interpretation. Here's what I found- for Nebraska, anyway:
(1) It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle with any object placed or hung in or upon the motor vehicle, except required or permitted equipment of the motor vehicle, in such a manner as to significantly and materially obstruct or interfere with the view of the operator through the windshield or to prevent the operator from having a clear and full view of the road and condition of traffic behind the motor vehicle. Any sticker or identification authorized or required by the federal government or any agency thereof or the State of Nebraska or any political subdivision thereof may be placed upon the windshield of the motor vehicle without violating this section.
(2) Enforcement of this section by state or local law enforcement agencies shall be accomplished only as a secondary action when a driver of a motor vehicle has been cited or charged with a traffic violation or some other offense.

Go for it. Hanging near a windshield may prompt small size and when necessary a hand to cushion the stone when you go over that cattleguard or speed bump. I drill and hang a fair number of translucent agates which become sun catchers in window, Christmas tree ornaments, chain pulls on ceiling fans and just about anything that can stand adornment. I recently met a lady who I only see once every few years and her first words were, I think of your rock work everyday because I had the agate slice you gave me hanging in my kitchen window --- clearly she liked it and viewed it often. So drill away and pass them around.

Would seem ok if the hanging cord was short - would likely not interfere with most drivers' view and wouldn't allow banging against the windshield. You could always print out a slip to go with them that says something like: "Consult your state motor vehicles regulations to ensure this item is displayed in compliance with any regulations concerning obstruction of driver view." Given what I've seen some people hang across their windshields, I'm not sure there'd be much of a problem, though.

“Are you kidding me? Why don’t you go chase that guy with twelve inches of snow on his car.”

I make traditional shape dream catchers that have translucent stones hanging from them. Some have purchased them to hang in windows as sun catchers. Individual cabs attached to a suction cup could also be used as sun catchers in windows. Similar ideas.
Agree that a disclaimer would be a good idea if they are marketed as rear view mirror attachments.

If and when I ever sell them I might do a disclaimer, but for now it was more for family members for Christmas.

Years ago I used to hang a top water fishing plug on my rear view mirror by one of it's treble hooks. Wife was a little animated one evening and impaled a finger on one of the hooks. Had to cut the hook barb off with wire cutters. I no longer hang anything on my rear view mirror.
