Picked this up yesterday from my friend. It's some sort of Oolitic rock, weighs 10 pounds. Agate, Jasper or Limestone? It seems like it should take a polish. IMG_3490 by Findrocks, on Flickr IMG_3491 by Findrocks, on Flickr

If it is a harder one, it will polish nicely. But I have seen some that is crumbly and grainy. Don't waste your time with that.
ETA - we also find it in the Southern California desert.

It looks a bit like the agate oolite from Harney County in Oregon (and possibly from other volcanic regions). There are also limestone-type oolites from elsewhere. I suggest testing with acid to see if you get bubbles.

I suggest testing with acid to see if you get bubbles. Tested it this morning with a few drops of Muratic, bubbled and fizzed pretty good, so it is Limestone. Still want to test to see if it can be polished.

Hope it polishes up well for you - limestone and marble can take a polish, so why not? That certainly would make some nicely patterned gems. People are attracted to orbs, and small orbs also let you cut smaller gems for things like earrings, ringstones, cufflinks, studs, beads, and similar without losing the orbicular pattern. Let us see the results if you get some to turn out!

It look like oolite to me I thought was from WY but it may be from OR. Takes an OK polish.
