Does anyone here play chess? I’m not pro or anything but I enjoy the game. I’ve thought of trying to make some pawns from amethyst and fluorite.

I haven't played chess in years, but enjoy it.
When living in AZ, there were many places to purchase carved chess sets from Mexico. We brought some back to WI. Then made wooden, inlay boards for them.
I say go for it, and post results.

I also haven't played in years, but used to keep a board set up on a coffee table. It was a great way to find people who played. Was always surprised by the number of people who played, but didn't freely admit to it in public.
I think it would be great fun to have pieces you made yourself.

I have the LiChess app, and I spend too much time playing 5 minute games, or atomic chess.

I played chess from elementary school through age 28. I liked to play 'seat of my pants' chess. No coaching, books or periodicals. I quit because I liked to play a positional, long game. I found that the more advanced players strategy to was to gain a small advantage and press it into a large advantage. These techniques were familiar to those who studied the game and it was like playing against an advanced robot.

The quicker games it’s harder for them to cheat plus they have engine spotters. That would be great to play you! You will probably beat me. (Mohstly)

I belonged to a chess club in high school......my Dad had a real nice set he got in Japan while stationed there, made of Ivory and Jade, the storage box was made of some kind of carved exotic reddish wood, lined with heavy felt. Each piece had it's own separate space within the top and lower half of this heavy box, we didn't have a table/board, so I built one out of dark walnut and light maple during a summer school wood-shop class. It was one of my very first real wood craft projects.
I took the set and board to school one day to use since the club was growing and we were short on sets at the time and it wasn't getting used at home...........the club master (instructor) about "blew a fuse" (in a good way), and suggested that I keep it at home. Even wanted to know if we'd sell it........lol.......hadn't realized at the time what it was worth.........one of my brothers ended up with it after my Dad passed away, Evidently it's worth a bundle, and he still has my board too.
Dad didn't play and it was more of dust collector. So I took an interest and learned the traditional openings, defenses and offenses/counter strategies....never stuck with it until I took an advanced math class in college where Pentominoes where applied..........very intriguing, but since, even though I'm an engineering type, once again it never stuck with me........got seriously involved in various Poker card games instead. That, I could make "money" at and instantly reap the benefits of my long hours of study (or loose my ass as well)......lol

I used to play as a kid and was actually really good at it. I would often beat the teacher who ran the chess club in school and he always tried to get me to join, but I was to cool for that lol. Told him he was lucky I played him at lunch. Now that I’m older I really don’t enjoy the game much at all. I’ve moved on to strategy board games and many others as well. It’s a lot more fun to me. With chess, everything is quiet and thinking and no conversation. With board games, there’s tons of laughs, great conversations and stories to be told. I used to care about winning all the time and would take forever to take my turn, until I saw how much this annoyed people. Now it’s more about the people and having fun. Could care less if I win or lose. Well as long as I don’t do something stupid and wind up beating myself. Then I do get upset. Still working on that one lol. I remember walking into a board game store one time and everyone was playing chess at table in the middle of the store. I walked up to the counter and asked the guy a question and he quickly shushed me and said I needed to tak in a whisper. I turned around and everyone playing chess was starring at me all pissed off with dirty looks. I was like you gotta be kidding me right? This is a board game store and I am a customer am I not? The guy at the counter went on to explain some utter chess etiquette to me and I said, screw this and walked out and took my business elsewhere. I’d rather have fun with friends rather then sit there for hours on end in silence for a battle of wits. That’s just not fun to me anymore. I mean what stories are to be told about it? Oh that you won and beat someone in 5 moves? Yea ok, everyone who plays chess knows that trick. With board games there’s soooo many stories and times remembered, munchies, alcohol or what not and always laughs and fun. I’m not knocking chess for the people who enjoy it. It’s just not my thing anymore and I’m just sharing my story and my opinion. Plus there’s only one game of chess. There’s literally over a million board games and thousands of new ones every year. Either way I hope you enjoy and have fun with whichever you choose and must say those chess pawns are pretty cool. Would love to see a whole set made. Please keep us updated with that project.

Thanks for the detailed reply RocksInNJ! I totally get what you are saying. I have not been around any chess clubs, that sounds really annoying and terrifying. Our style of chess is more the NYC street hustler chess. Lots of good natured ribbing. Mohstly I just play 5 minute games. There are no perfect moves at that point. But thanks again Bill, and I am fascinated with those pictures of game night. Beautiful! I just picked up cooking customers, a new card game that was created by a local restaurant owner, you should check it out!

A 5 minute games of chess. I’ve never heard of this before. Curious as to how it works. I’ll take a look on Boardgamegeek and see if I can find it. Always interested in new games. Many thanks.

Screenshot of my lichess app. As you can see the shorter games are 1 minute with no time added per turn. You have to move fast and not dumb. There are no good moves at that point. In the custom menu you can take it down to 15 seconds.
