So, my daughter has some random days off school. It's annoying, because they aren't days that I have off work, but it's exciting because it gives me an opportunity to take the day off work, and go rockhounding with her. Last week we made the 2 hour (each way) drive to Diamond Hill Mine in Antreville, SC to look for Amethyst and other types of Quartz. We didn't have the most successful day, but it was a great day to be out digging together, nonetheless. 70 degree, sunny weather in January is nothing to complain about.
I did blow the sole off of one of my good Vasque hiking boots, though. I'll need to get some cheap rubber boots for future trips. My shoes I'd brought to change into after digging got seriously muddy, as did the floor mats of my car.
Anyways, does anyone have a recommendation on a good place (fee or free) to rockhound, within a few hours drive of Columbia, SC? There's a bunch of places I'd like to try this spring, but I'm looking for somewhere to go in late January, as she's got another day off. The other constraint is that it needs to be somewhere that an 8 year old can go (safely). I want to try Graves Mountain in GA, but they don't let kids under 12 on the mountain, so that's out for now. Anyone have any creative suggestions?

RickB, thanks for the welcome, and for the guidance. I'm also in Columbia, we need to get together sometime. Are you part of CGMS?
