So when do you think you may dig them up. This is a very interesting thread for sure. I am definitely excited to see the results

Not digging up until tomorrow. Checked the temperature again, and around the edges it is about 200 give or take 20°. But in the center where the rock is, it still hits the high limit over 400° so I’m waiting one more day. Hopefully get some better color change this time. It definitely cooked enough.

Dont pull it too soon you can get fractures all over and inside.

I’m going to break it up eventually with a crack hammer for tumbling, so a few fractures don’t worry me.
I can’t believe how long it is holding heat. Tonight will be the fourth night since I finished adding wood to the fire. Maybe it is from the charcoal left from the first fire. I’m sure there was plenty below and around the rock when it was re-buried.

Still warm, but the experiment is complete. Here are a couple before and afters - Before After Before (after heat treat #1) After There were definitely fractures, but it'll be going in the tumbler anyway. Would have been better to find the middle ground between burn 1 and 2, but not bad for a first couple tries...

Yes there is a definite change in color. Very cool experiment now that you have had a practice run I bet we will see more experiments in the future while this one gets tumbled.
I see the big one in the background waiting for it’s turn in the cooker Thanks for putting this up

Excellent results...I think you would have a few very nice slabs in there. Just sayin'. And thanks for taking us along on the journey! 😀
