Howdy folks! Christa and I got the chance Wednesday to get out of the big shitty city and spend a day out in nature. A trip to the river was top on my mind, and the day turned out splendid! We both snapped a few pics along the way. Everything was nice and green due to the recent rains After the long hike down we’re almost to the area There were many flowers blooming out there. Not so sure on ID’s here, hopefully rockpickerforever can chime in here These were growing on vines over other bushes.. I'm think Morning Glories? This one was similar but red Some pretty orange flowers.. California Poppies maybe? These big white blooms are all over out there. And some very pretty trumpet blooms, the only one of these I spotted there So one thing that was trippy, the ground was crawling with caterpillars! Jean do you know what these are? They were literally crawling and falling into pools of water. They’d wiggle a bit then sink to the bottom This one was very different from the rest Finally made it down to the river which is running muddy from the resent monsoons We hounded a bit then relaxed in the shade and had a picnic. It was terrific! Soon the skies above us got noisy and we looked up to see a horde of crows above. If you zoom in you’ll see over 50 in this pic (yes I was counting crows) Really wild sight! Finally it was time to hike out. Stopped along the way and took a pic of my darling wife We got up to the car and had a friend waiting for us! I took those two, Christa took this one What a great day! I will be posting the rock haul on the Specimens board. Found a real good one Thanks for coming along!

We had the opportunity to drive by this area on Thursday, so we took a few pictures. As you can see the place has deteriorated a bit since the picture at the beginning of this thread was taken. The stone house building: Close up to the bone building: And the historical site marker Como Bluff: We also stopped at the Medicine Bow Museum. Out side is a monument to Owen Wister made mostly of Petrified Wood. Wow.. so glad you got to visit in person, and thanks for adding the pictures here! Interesting read on the Como Bluffs. I remember reading about the Dinosaur Wars previously, but didn't realize this was one of the sites! Love that Pet Wood Pyramid as well!

Spent some time this past weekend on a long overdue project.. cleaning up my main display cabinet. It's amazing how much dust can accumulate in a cab with closed doors in Arizona. I guess from all the haboobs? Anyway here's a pic of one of the shelves, mostly Mexican and Condors. My avatar agate is in the bottom right, still waiting to be polished Thanks for looking!

This weekend I cut a little chunk of Willow Creek that I had picked up years ago. The last slab, as it got closer to the rhyolite, had a stream of agate running through it as well as some small crystal looking inclusions. I haven't cut enough of this to know if it's unusual or not, but it was something I hadn't seen before. Check it out.. back lit Kinda cool huh?

Or get technical and determine the number of threads per inch on your cross feed screw of the vice. If its 20 threads per inch, and you want 1/4" slabs do 5 turns of the crank. Of if its 16, well you get the picture. I have two saws that I trust the vice cross feed on, and one I have to use 5 1/2 turns and one I just use 5 turns. There must be a thread difference but I have not tried to measure it. But the one that takes 5.5 turns to get the thickness I prefer is my old HP (which should be like yours). I'm just cutting to what feels good and acknowledging that thicker is better than too thin. A thicker blade with the same number of threads on the crossfeed requires more turns to make up for slab thickness lost to the thicker blade. To answer sophia13 , I crank 5 times for approx. 1/4" slab on my HP 14". Lynn Funny, 5 cranks on my HP 18" and 5 and a quarter on my LS 12 for the same results*. * with a small undocumented uncertainty of course
